    Hello not_Fritz,

the shortage may be seasonal, but on Friday I have decided to buy the KK 5mm for viewing the planets and the Moon.
The Austrian vendors are not as complicated as ours, so the deal went straight by phone.

Weeks ago, I have been also considering the TMB Super Monocentric 4mm,
but the guy on the eBay has been asking 400 EUR.
If I had a Steinheil military grade achro, then the Steinheil monocentric (even if from TMB) would be nice,
    but that's not the case.
I know, Steinheil is Steinheil, I used to have a colleague from Steinheil.

Thank you for your best qualified recommendations on the astronomy eyepieces,

    JG

I have an 18mm Celestron Ultima ( 1 1/4") which I love great EP or even go wider with the Ultima 35mm for the widest 1 1/4" view you can get. These are a little hard to find now but very good EP's IMHO.

Because of the size of the baffle of the rear port of the 5" SCT, it can not benefit from 2" EPs and you wouldn't want/need a high power planetary 2" EP, the shorter focal length EPs would be 1.25".

I would never recommend one of these zoom EPs, you will get much better performance from a dedicated EP.

I would recommend a good 10mm Ortho for planetary, a focal reducer for most DSOs and a GSO 32mm plossl for the widest field possible in a more affordable EP. If I could stretch the budget on a wide field EP, I would get an ES 24mm 68.

As I said I don't use zoom eyepieces however there are people on the forum who do and say the opposite, they love them, horses for courses

He has a 10mm and wanted another, personally I would join a local club and try some and see what is best for you

    Hi Barry,

I have come into this a bit late, and I don't know what your verdict is re eye-relief: but if you have astigmatism and need your glasses, then the Long Perng planetaries are very good value. I have used their 3mm, 5mm and 9mm versions and they all have very good optics: giving my TV 3-6mm a run for its money... (The 9mm was a gift from an Aussie dealer in apology for mucking me around with another purchase: and it was a nice surprise optically!)
Orion and Williams sell them as their "super planetary": but at nearly twice the price that I paid for the Long Perng version.
They have 20mm eye-relief, and 55-degree FOV (a lot wider than the Orthos), good contrast, and are sharp to the edge in long FL scopes that I have tried.
Not sure where you get them in the UK, but here is the home link: E9L-A Long Eyerelief Eyepiece(celestial) / Products / Long Perng Co., Ltd.

All the best, and happy birthday for the big one coming up!

    - Dean

    Hello Barry,

I am with Dean on the Long Perng "7 lenses in 4 groups". They are a on-budget, but well performing alternative to the Pentax XF and similar more expensive EPs. I used to have both, the Long Perng rebranded by TS, and the Pentax XF.

The TS brand is here: https://www.teleskop-express.de/shop...ti-coated.html

    Best,
