Default Meade series 4000 super plossl - 1st generation

    Hello all,

I was in Ottawa to do some work and visit family, and I found this at a little shop (Focus Scientific). I believe this is a 1st generation 5-element Meade 40mm Series 4000 Super Plossl.

It has “Japan” stamped on the black housing, near the barrel.

Smooth barrel design, and no eyecup on this one.

I was after a used TV Plossl that was advertised by the shop, but decided on this EP instead.. it had been on the vendor’s shelf for some weeks and he made me a good offer, and so here we are.

I did some research on Meade Series 4000 Super Plossls last year, and discovered that these are sometimes referred to as a pseudo-Masuyama design. This is interesting as I wanted this one for my long focus f15 refractor. It came in the original box, and the eyepiece is in very good condition. I have read that these early versions were made by Towa, but I can't confirm this.

Most important, it shows great contrast in the little frac, with a wide field.

    Regards,

    Ian

A nice eyepiece that will work well in your f/15. Try it in your reflector and see what the view center to edge looks like.
If it is a Meade 4000 Plossl it should be reasonably clear to the edge, if a Masuyama then it should show some degradation as they work best at f/7 and slower.
If it is a regular Plossl the Japan made ones were still very good.

Thanks Gabrielle! I'll give that a go. I've also heard that the reflection test (shining a bright focused source through the EP and tipping slightly to count the number of reflections from above) can achieve the distinction.

The regular Plossl was 44 AFOV, The 52 Masuyama were never made in a 40mm so I am curious to see how it works for you.

Here is a reprint of the original brochure. It would appear that you have an excellent classic 4-element Plossl.
