    Default Orion Expanse

I got a set of these with a used scope. Was out with the ST80 last night, with my old friend the 24 pan. However my LP keeps getting worse, so I reached for the 20 and 15mm Expanses, I was quite pleased with them.

Are they supposed to be decent EPs? How do the compare quality wise compared to Plossls?

The only Orion Expanse I have ever used is the 6mm. I absolutely hate it. It was barely ok in my little refractor, but is downright horrible in my reflectors. Maybe I have one that isn't collimated well, or maybe that's just a bad focal length for the series. I dunno, but I'm not going to buy another one to find out.

I find them to be a step above Plossls. They'll show you some field curvature in fast telescopes, and the 9 and 6mm are generally agreed to be the best in the series, all with solid eye relief. Ironically I was testing the 20mm also in my I80 (same as ST80) over the weekend and while the edge of field distortion was quite noticeable, overall I'm finding these to be a bit better than I had originally assessed. I was going to sell them off, but I think I'll hang onto them awhile as a knockaround set, especially since the Meades will be too preoccupied in the dob, so I'll probably use these primarily in the short tube refractor along with the MA's it came with.

That Meade UWA 14mm is a stunner in that telescope though. No comparison.

I have the Expanse set and think they are great... Anytjing at about f/5 or lower though and they show significant astigmatism, so I use mine only for like f/8 - f/10.

I had a couple come with the ST80 - they were better than the Orion Plossls I had been using and set me to looking for better EP's.
I do not know how they would compare to a high quality one.... but I like everything in my sig line much better and no longer own them.
    Moving on.......

Then it's a minority of two. I've used three different ones. NOT for me. I'm just glad they happened to come with scopes I've bought as an extra. If I'd spent money specifically on them, I would have been seriously disappointed and they would have been returned. The ones I've had were quickly sold off on ebay to the highest bidder and I was happy to see them go. You'll not see me recommend them to anyone.

Thought the 6 and 9mm's worked fine in fast scopes, the 15 and 20 showed edge distortions.

I have the 9mm and the 20mm (standard ST80 fare). The 9mm is a pretty decent eyepiece. The 20mm is ok, though I had to pull mine apart and blow the debris out of it. I have no experience with other focal lengths.

The 9mm is supposedly the best of the series. They are Barsta manufactured and sold under a variety of brand names, often cheaper than the Orion ones.

I had to clean my 9mm Expanse too by unthreading the drawtube/negative lens.

Eye placement and positioning are a learning curve. I find they're good in an f/5 ST80 and when you get your head around them are a nice eyepiece.

I think they're a bit 'Marmite'; you either love them or hate them lol.

Not sure how you'd compare them with Plossls though, they seem very different animals to me.
