    Default 6mm EP suggestions

    Hello,

Had a perfect clear night last night and was able to see Saturn beautifully through my scope! I believe I saw titan as well, although it was a tiny spec of light so who knows. Anyway, the best view of it was through my 10mm Orion plossl in a 2x Barlow lense. However, the eye relief on the EP was difficult to say the least.

I'm wanting to upgrade to a higher quality EP with more forgiving eye relief, and the same clarity (or better!) that I was able to see with the 10mm + 2x Barlow. I'm also definitely interested in wide field of view pieces after reading the sticky notes at the top of this forum. I was thinking a 6mm would be a perfect EP. I've seen conflicting views about the Expanse 6mm on a fast scope like mine (f/5) but I am brand new to this hobby and don't quite understand even after reading the fantastic info in this forum.

Any recommendations for a great 6mm in the $60-70 USD range?

Have a look at this - better than the Expanse for a fast scope and in your price range.

If it were not for the fact that they are currently out of stock, and about $10 over your budget, I might have suggested this one:

    https://www.highpointscientific.com/...-epwp6255le-01

Its eye relief is listed at 12.9mm, which may or may not work for you.

That said, I will recommend this one:

    https://www.astronomics.com/astro-te...ce_p16944.aspx

I have found these to be excellent performers for their price point, and a cut above a standard plossl. Eye relief is listed at a comparable 13mm.

    Hope that helps.

Agena 1.25" Starguider Dual ED Eyepiece - 8mm

Barlow the 12mm or get the 8mm. This Barlow has a removable bottom element that threads directly onto an EP for 1.5x. With the 12mm EP you also get 6mm and 9mm.

Awesome, thanks for the suggested pieces! That Barlow seems like a pretty noce idea also, hmm.

Your scope is F5, so 5mm EP with 1mm exit pupil will be about right for planets and Moon.

I would join recommendations above, and suggest Celestron X-Cel LX 5mm or Agena Dual ED (Astrotech Paradigm) 5mm. Both are great on planets and much better quality than Expanse EPs.

My slight preference is towards Celestron X-Cel LX, simply because due to the flat top it has a bit better effective eye relief than Dual ED.

This is a bit confusing to me. Consensus on forums is that Agena Starguider Dual ED and Astrotech Paradigm Dual ED are identical EPs. They certainly look the same. But for Paradigm listed ER is 13mm, while for Starguider is 15.8mm. It could be that 13mm is effective ER (from top of eyeguard) and 15.8mm is from the top of the lens (part of it lost due to the eyeguard).

Eye relief is rarely measured honestly - from the CLOSEST point of contact on the eyepiece to your cornea WHILE SHOWING THE WHOLE FIELD OF VIEW. Most measure from the surface of the eyepiece eye lens to your cornea and many use the longest distance at which focus is achieved, whether or not this includes a view of the field stop. Almost all eyepiece reviews show slight to significant shorter eye reliefs than any manufactures claims.

Thank you all for the help! I ended up getting the Celestron X-Cel LX 5mm and it arrived yesterday This piece is solid and feels to be of outstanding quality, above that of the 25mm and 10mm plossl pieces that came with my scope. I just need a clear night now haha.
