Default The case of the Omni 20mm

I was looking for a 20mm or 25mm Celestron Omni, and noticed that B&H nor Agenda list them. So I went to the Celestron website. None there either. Chatted with Jesse in CS, and she said they don't have an Omni- Plossl in that size range.

I ask if they were being discontinued, and Jesse replied, "Not to my knowledge.". Odd gap in a lineup with a 40mm, 32mm, 15mm, 12mm.......
Maybe its the Omni black hole. . No big deal. I have a decent 26mm Meade MA.

I bought some SvBony Plossl eye pieces. A 10mm and a 40mm. They are really light and feel plastic.

I like the Omni eyepieces, but I'll just fill the gap with a GSO.

There are no listings in the "20-25mm void" at Amazon, so we must conclude that they have been entirely removed from the face of the earth. There is always the Vite 23mm aspheric, if you want an economical stop gap.

I'm not sure who actually manufactures the Omni range. In my opinion they are as good as Meade or GSO Plossls in scopes of f/6 or slower. The have sharp field stops unlike a lot of the GSO series which have very undefined field stops. Although this doesn't personally bother me. I don't know why the Omnis have such a weird gap in their focal lengths. I tend to agree with Ozman13 though, and if in doubt go with a GSO Plossl, as they definitely work well in faster scopes. I like the GSO 30mm drawtubes, even though they're aluminium, and some still have undercuts. GSO are actually slowly phasing out their undercuts, but the lower lip in the GSO undercut itself is tapered like TeleVue undercuts, and are actually easy to extract from a compression ring.

Above: GSO 6, 9, 12, 15 & 25mm Plossls ironically housed in an old Celestron AstroMaster Kit box

Most Celestron Plossls included in kits are almost certainly made by Barsta (BST) and are basically the same as the Sky-Watcher and Orion Sirius series. The Orion Plossls mainly feature 22mm drawtubes without undercuts, whereas the Celestron/Sky-Watcher have undercuts. The Omni Plossls have similar 22mm aluminium drawtubes with undercuts. I've actually replaced the drawtubes on my three Omni (6, 12, 15mm) Plossls with 22mm brass/chromed ones.

It's a possibility that they are made by Barsta as Celestron recommend them to be used in scopes of f/6 and slower like the Sky-Watchers. I have sets of TeleVue, assorted Barsta, Vixen and Meade Plossls. They all have their respective virtues and vices. If I had to recommend a set based on the criteria of performance, aesthetics, ergonomics and value for money, it would be a toss up between the Vixens and the Meades I think.

I'm pretty sure that's also known as a Sky-Watcher LET. I have the 28mm version.

Just to be sure that no one is misled by the various postings in this thread, The above pictured "Pentax styled outer shell" eyepiece is supplied with a number of Skywatcher and Celestron scopes. It is a three element Kellner variant and entirely different optically from the 4 element Omni which is a true symmetrical Plossl design.

    I believe it's actually a reversed Kellner. It's supplied with 180mm Sky-Watcher Mak's inter alia I think.
