    Default trouble with outreach eyepieces

OK I thought I was out of the business of doing public or semi public events but I’ve agreed to do one more. Problem is that my outreach eyepiece kit is gone. I was using Baader Hyperions for that but sold them. So I am bereft of outreach glass. What to do?

These are not requirements, more like desirable properties. In order of importance
    1) must work in f5 scope
    2) 1.25” format
    3) 20 mm eye relief
    4) ~70 degree FOV
    5) 25, 15, 10mm fls roughly
    6) something new

I could restock Hyperions. Been there done that though.

I immediately thought of the Vixen LVWs but…. They’re no longer available? Yikes. That would have been a solution but no more.

From what I have I could cobble together a set from my “private stock”: Panoptic 24mm, Delos 14 and 10mm could be good enough but then they aren’t private anymore. Get a “public” set of the same?

I could just demote the “private stock” and dabble with Pentax XWs as a replacement. That’s expensive but lets me play more with Pentax, which might be fun. Still expecting a new OTA so budget rules this out for now.

Alternatively I could get a “public” Panoptic 24mm and add 15 and 11mm Delites giving up on the 70* AFOV.

    In another thread
    Pentax XW 3.5mm 2nd light on 4th August, 2017

I'm getting reinforcement for the desire to play with Pentax XWs. Also the idea of using a zoom might be interesting. A zoom would provide convenience and less inventory to keep track during the event.

I'm reluctant to spend so much on a Leica zoom for public purposes. Maybe get a public Hyperion Mk IV zoom and a private Leica after I've absorbed the new OTA properly.

    Thoughts?

Sorry for thinking about this in public so much. It's a slow astrophysics news day and the observing weather is as usual quite miserable.

Wow, how is your migraine? That much thought almost gave me one.
    Hope you work it out.
    Good luck and clear skies.

Thanks. Fortunately I enjoy difficult optimization problems, running through the possibilities. So won't suffer a migraine. Sorry if I caused you one.

This would be a very convincing point for me. The kids I've done outreach for love it and gives them a sense of being able to actually operate and adjust something, as trivial as that may seem to us.

I should add that the potential for rowdiness at this contemplated event is rather high....

Celestron Ultima Duo has a 68°AFOV
while I am perusing the web I will keep my eye open for some LVW too.
Pentax would be ideal but a bit expensive on the outreach side if using for "general" use.
Radians perhaps, if you do not mind used?

Just read your last post, do not get the Pentax

    No don't mind at all.

Is it fair to assume that the reason is the potential for rowdiness, not the Pentax?

Though they would probably survive any roughhousing with their build quality I would hate to hear about one being damaged!

Agreed. The thought of removing beer stains would be off putting.

I have been using my Ethos EP for outreach for very many years now without incidences what so ever. Maybe it's just my attitude.
