Maybe. But I don't think my attitude is the controlling factor here. This will be an atypical event for me. More of a party atmosphere with viewing as a sideline. I've never done that.

Well the Pentax is built like a tank and is water resistant...

OPT may have "some" LVW left, not sure which focal lengths though.

All true. I'm a bit fanatic about cleaning coatings though, in the sense of wanting to avoid that....

Drinking and viewing would be a new one for me. I would probably be a nervous wreck!
I do not even let anyone near my telescopes when they are having a cigarette.

I would not be partaking of course. I'm not hosting so I'm not in charge or control.
I've never observed smoking among this group so I might be OK there.

I absolutely agree. I don't allow anyone smoking around my equipment. Smoke and glass are a bad combination.

I am intrigued: what's your attitude Stan? Do you project a "You muck up my scope/eyepieces and I'll rip your arms off!" vibe?

Seriously though, I find my (now old) Williams 7.5-22.5 zoom II works very well for outreach. I also use my TV 32mm Plossl and occasionally my 18mm Radian. I am not sure that you need wide field for outreach, especially because people are usually more interested in planets/ the moon/ bright fuzzies.

not_Fritz, if this is only a one-off event, buying new eyepieces for the occasion seems like a lot of money- or is that just a good excuse?

    All the best,

    Dean

Giving up on the wide field and / or zooming might be a good plan....

I'm thinking that if I can get cajoled once perhaps twice or more isn't far behind. So clearly we're in excuse territory....

I didn't mean to offend or provoke anyone with my comment about attitude. I enjoy sharing my passion for astronomy with others. I want people to have the best opportunity at viewing that I do, so I give them the best that I have. If something happens to my equipment then I will deal with that, but I don't worry about what might be. Every piece of equipment that I have is replaceable or repairable. What I get back from sharing that equipment is priceless.

Good for you. I can't afford to be so carefree. I also am not comfortable in crowds or large groups of people so this will be a dutiful exercise with little joy. My preferred sort of sharing is to have no more than four folks show up at my place. Then I'm perfectly happy to show what my best stuff can do, of course.

So the only attitude change that my budget permits is to don my Darth Vader suit and breathe ominously. That would not be fun for anyone.
