Default 2x Powermate for ED80 refractor - worth it?

I have an Explore Scientific ED80 refractor. My EP choices for higher mag are 3.5mm Delos (137x), 6mm Ethos (80x). Rule of thumb says max mag for an 80mm scope is 157x or 189x. The Powermate and 6mm would put me at 160x and the Delos would yield 274x, maybe too much for the scope. I'm wondering if it's worth it to spend $300 for the gains I would get.

    Any opinions?

You will seldom be able to use it with those EPs (at least the 3.5mm). The 3.5mm you have is starting to push the limits of the scope. I see you already have a 2xBarlow, what does it show you with the 6mm and 3.5mm EPs. If the image is starting to break down from too much magnification with that one, the new Powermate isn't likely to be that much better concerning image break down due to over magnification. I'd probably be more tempted to get the TV 3-6mm zoom.
