    Default New Eyepiece

I finally received my new Orion Stratus 5mm eyepiece yesterday. Now if I can only get some clear skies to try it out in my 12" dob.

I tried out the new Orion Stratus 5mm eyepiece Saturday night and it works great for looking at the planets. I could see several of the cloud bands and the great red spot on Jupiter. I really wish I would have thought about it though and got something around a 10 or 12mm eyepiece. With the barlow I still could have had the higher power eyepiece. Live and learn I guess.

True, you would not be able to use it too often. But under good seeing conditions it will be useful for other high power applications: splitting doubles, planetary nebulae and other small DSOs, etc.

I had similar thoughts after purchasing a 6.7mm ES to use with my 6" f/8 Dob. Overall, I have been quite pleased with my 6.7mm ES eyepiece. It is a bit of a "one-trick pony" but it does that trick extremely well.

I think that your 12" is f/4.9. So the 5mm EP will give you around 1mm exit pupil, which is great for detailed views of planets and the moon. At 300x, you will be able to see the rubble on the bottom of the craters, more or less. Good seeing conditions will be required and with such large aperture, you may get into trouble.

I have never used a focal reducer, but that might be an option if you want to get more versatility out of this eyepiece. (??) Or you could see about returning/exchanging it.

As an owner of the 5mm Orion Stratus, I know you will love it. It will good for planets with your 12 inch DOB. I also use the 5mm on small planetary nebulae.
