    Default Meade 5000 UWA

What's everyone's opinion on these? I see Amazon has the 20mm for $126 which is marked down about 25 bucks from where I find it elsewhere. I was saving for an ES 82 18mm, but this FL is one I need filled badly because the 20mm Expanse I have is mediocre at best in my dob. Aside from the twist-up eyecups and grease, they seem to get good reviews. Is it worth the money, or should I just hold out for the ES?

It's a really nice EP and I'm sure you would like it, BUT, you are putting it up against my FAVORITE. The ES 18mm 82 is the ONE EP I would have to have. So it's a hard call because the Meade UWA is really nice, but the ES 18mm 82 just can't be beat. I seriously do not envy your choice.

Have no fear. I have both lines, and compared ES82 and Meade UWA 5000 on many occasions and many targets. Optically, they perform to the same (great) level. The differences are in body design and availability of different FL.

I had ES82 18mm and 14mm and sold them, because I like Meade UWA 5000 EPs better in this two FL. Sorry Ozman.

ES82 18mm was very sharp, but it had very tight actual eye relief. No matter what I tried I just couldn't see the whole FOV. With Meade counterpart I can see whole FOV even with my glasses on.

For ES82 14mm in addition to ER issue the contrast was not as good as in Meade UWA 5000 14mm.

Hi Don! I have the 24mm Meade and the 18mm ES. I like the Meade eyepiece but honestly think the quality of the Explore eyepiece is better. Not much difference but the main problem I have with Meade is the inconsistency of a quality product. I also have the 30mm UWA and the quality is not good at all. Lots of color around the edges. I have several ES eyepieces and each one is consistently well made. I would save for the ES!

Like I said, really hard call. The good thing, you will have an excellent EP either way you go.

Meade UWA 24mm and 30mm are the older models, which (ironically) where made by the same factory which makes ES 82 EPs. Old Meade UWA had FL identical to ES82 and many suspect to have the same optical design as ES82, just different bodies.

New Meade 5000 UWA where redesigned and are manufactured at the different location. So, it is unfair to judge their performance by older model.

I had read that, so pretty much as I'm going through I have to cull out anything thats not been written in the last couple years. That narrows down the feedback alot. To further confuse the issue Meade also seems to have a 100 degree and a third line (HD 60?) all under the 5k series.

Yes, their line names are confusing. I can't say anything about their 100 deg, but HD60 is a great EP line of 60 deg EPs, very similar to Celstron X-Cel LX. They have also made some good quality Plossls in the past. Meade 5000 SWA line of 68 deg EPs is loved by many and suspiciously resembles ES68.

I have 14mm and 18mm from older 5000 UWA and 5.5mm and 8.8mm from new UWA, and honestly all are great EPs, neck to neck in performance with ES82.

The Meade HDs are good EPs but are not in the same class as the ESs or UWAs.
