    Default Musing on Eyepiece Waste

Several years back I started thinking about how sellers and OEMS insist on bundling eyepieces with even their advanced scopes. Obviously selling scopes without eyepieces to novice users would be disaster, but by the time most of us go to our intermediate scope we have eyepieces that we like and are certainly better than the stock eyepieces that come packaged with scopes.

I see several issues, not the least being the manufacture and environmental harm that comes from producing, stocking and shipping eyepieces that may never get used. However, it also adds to the price of each scope, and gives me the frustration of trying to give away or sell my unused eyepieces.

Nothing can be done with packages sold on Amazon, department stores or camera shops, but surely Orion, Meade and Celestron could do better.

Am I totally off the mark with this?

Buying on the internet and at big box stores is a HUGE factor. Packages sell at all price points, and incomplete packages get trashed in internet reviews, so manufacturers sell packages. Bricks and mortar telescope stores used to give store credit for unwanted accessories, to allow you to upgrade at the time of a new scope purchase. They could sell the included eyepieces from mid priced scopes to people looking to upgrade their beginner model with Huygens and Ramsden eyepieces. As consumers we don't even have to get off of our asses to send emails to the customer service / client relations departments to let them know what we want. With enough demand, the manufacturers will offer the product you are suggesting.

Well, imho, the eyepieces we get with our scopes that are not needed are a great way to help people who are new to the hobby by donating them so at least they can get to start experiencing more with their new scopes.

I do agree with you to as large extent though because it seems wasteful including them in say a $ 2000 scope because most people who are going to buy that will definitely already be well established in the hobby and should have a pretty good set of eyepieces already, or at least have better than they get bundled with a new scope.

Yes, feedback is part of change, partly why I posted this. Interestingly, I brought this up to Orion when they did their annual email for feedback to customers. I pointed out that even their option to build your own scope required and eyepiece and din't include the higher end ones I might of wanted. I was told that not for negotiation. Oh well.

I have given away many eyepieces (scopes too), and often to help out beginners; however, then they upgrade their scope, they then have the same problem as well. Few serious observers use the eyepieces provided with scopes.

You caught my point exactly, that is the intermediate or advanced scopes that it is really a waste for, since few people buying those don't have their favourites. Also, 9 or 10mm and a 20 or 25mm are what most included, so you are often not much help to someone trying to expand or experiment since that is what they have also.

    Thanks,

Maybe we can get Pentax to come out with telescopes and XOs again....that'd be a nice package....

You might be able to talk Explore Scientific into something in the way of what comes with one of their scopes.
