Default Baader Hyperion Mk-III Zoom discontinued

From the chatter I've read apparently the Mk-III version of the Hyperion zoom eyepiece is discontinued and will be replaced by the Mk-IV model. This should happen in the late January to early February time frame. I know some dealers are out of stock now and my understanding is that if you order, they will ship the Mk-IV when they receive them. Also heard that the differences between the two models is not sufficient enough to really warrant someone upgrading if they already have the III, unless of course they simply wish to.

    Thanks Alan.

Let's hope that the mechanics of the series IV won't freeze when zooming during the winter season.

Agreed JG. When I used to have a Mk-III, I experienced that type of problem. I also found over time that the "click-stops" quit clicking. I had to actually look at the pointer to be totally certain of where I was. While I am not a strong fan of zooms, I do see the utility for something like what I am doing right now - traveling. Saves a lot of space and weight. But I would have a wide field as a finder eyepiece rather than relying on the narrowed view of the zoom at the 20 to 24mm end of the run. Also a barlow or shorter focal length eyepiece to take you further than 8mm at the other end of the scale.

I heard directly from Thomas Baader that the optics are the same. Mechanically there are differences.

    Hello all,

the optics of the Baader zoom is fairly good, not behind that of the Zeiss Diascope zoom. Maybe that the Baader zoom optics design comes also from Zeiss, adapted for the Far East manufacturing.

That sounds promising then David. If they can iron out the few mechanical issues they had, that will be a big plus in their favor.

Sometimes procrastination can work out in our favor. Hopefully this will be the case with the Mk-IV.

The changes I saw had more to do with what you could connect to it. It is a veritable swiss army knife. Thomas Baader showed me personally all the configurations. Special attention shown for spotting scopes and bino viewers.

I'll just name drop because I really don't get out much. I do recall he said the optical design did not change because it was already good. I don't recall if he mentioned that the click stop mechanics were changed.

    Hello all,

the essential improvement is stated in the link:
"The zooming-mechanism as well as the inner zooming rails for all lens groups have been modified to improve cold temperature operation"
as the Baader Hyperion zoom used to gave up zooming at minus Celsius temperatures.
There is a wealth of accessories, similarly to the fix focus Hyperion line, some of the accessories are new.
