Default Illuminated Reticle - Found a way to tone it down. (Meade Astrometric)

Ordered a Meade Astrometric for some double star fun back in Summer. The first unit arrived in rough shape, unable to cleanly focus the reticle and had to be sent back. The initial tale can be found here if interested:
Meade Astrometric - What are the group experiences with this EP?

I received a 2nd unit, this one was much clearer but the brightness of the Mead Astrometric made it difficult to use. No real adjustment between off and glaring as well as uneven brightness. Usable for star alignment but too bright for any fine work.
    EP as received.

    Meade raw.jpg

Looked a couple of solutions. The first, red brake light tape did not work well. The was no real dimming effect with one layer and I could not get it to stay in place.
Second try was red nail polish. Lord bless my beloved, no question & nary a word at my request for red nail polish. She just disappeared only to come back with a bottle ... too many years stuck with an DIY nerd to even blink.

I gave it a coating and let it sit. Dimmed the brightness to this point:
    Meade first coat.jpg

Improvement but not as much as I would like so it got a second coat, essentially potting the LED.
    meade potted.jpg

The results after the 2nd coat or potting the LED were very good:

I know you may not see a lot of difference in the 1st vs 2nd coat pictures but in the 2nd coat picture the the reticle is turned 1/2 way up. Unfortunately my discoping skills are severely lacking. I could not get the cell camera to pick up the pattern turned all the way down. The lines are fairly sharp now and I'll get it turned on some doubles when we catch a clear night that is not -1°F out there.

There you have it - pot the LED with some red nail polish to dim the view.

    Stay warm out there!

Wow they don't have variable adjustment?

I have three reticle ep's all different models manufactuers and all three have adjustment.

Anyhow glad you found a work around!

I have 4 different reticle EPs, 2 of them are Meade including this model, all have a variable power illuminator. One of the illuminators has this problem, it's either on full power or off. It was one of my later acquisitions, so when I use this reticle I swap out the illuminators from another EP. But if it were my only one that would be a problem. Glad you got yours working well for you.

It has the brightness adjustment - It just would not go dim enough for practical use ( to my eye anyway )

    Thanks UM!

Thank you!. Both of the units I tried had the difficulty - there was really only off & light up the runway. Forgot to include - here is what I used:

You should do your nails too!

I've used similar brand to do a lot of things. Specifically those damn green led's on the power 'ciggy lighter' plugs.

That's a good idea! I'm going to do that one. I keep trying to keep the green LED pointed down toward the ground, but it's still offensive. I taped it up once, but that came off in the cold and interfered with the connection if I put a lot of tape on, so the tape didn't work. This sounds like it will take care of it though. I've just been putting up with it, no more of that.

Good to see you managed to get it to an acceptable level Steve.
Now you just need to download the AAVSOs list of double stars on the revisit list and start taking some measurements
