    Question Eyepiece comparison and upgrade

    Hello

First of all, Happy New Year! May 2017 bring dark and clear skies everynight for all of us

Now, on to the matter at hand: I currently own an Astromaster 130 (FL=650, Ap=130mm, pretty good collimated) and I'm planning to upgrade my eyepieces, since the ones I already have are not very good (they're the ones that came with the scope; a 20mm erector and a 10mm Plössl plus the Astromaster Accesory Set). I'm thinking about these ones:

    Orion Expanse 9mm 1.25" at aprox. USD$117

Celestron X-cel Lx 9mm at aprox. USD$119 USED

    Celestron 93432 Luminos 15mm at aprox. USD$147

So, how good are these eyepieces? How do they handle reflection? Because with the eyepieces that I currently own, there's always a "halo" around bright objects; like Jupiter and Venus and I also can't get the stars to look like "pinpoints". I blame the coating on the eyepieces (only the eye lenses are coated) but I wonder...

I would gladly buy Explore Scientific or TeleVue or any of the high-end brands/models; but sadly, no one in Chile sells those

    thank you and clear skies

Here are three posts on this forum that go into eyepiece selection in depth. Anyone thinking about eyepieces would do well to read these:

I have used the Orion Expanse and the Celestron X-Cel LX. I have not used a Luminos.

The Expanse will have serious field curvature in your fast scope. The X-Cel will perform better and is an EP that I like quite well.

The Luminos is an EP that gets good reviews but I have read that it shows field curvature in faster scopes, but again I have no experience with this one.

I have tried the 23mm Luminos in my f/5 dob. Some notable barrel distortion and the background space was a bit more grey compared to ES 82° 24mm. The view seemed lighter, a tiny bit less contrasty. May have been that particular specimen though.

I have a Meade 130mm f/5 reflector similar to your Celestron. Among several different kinds of eyepieces I use with it, I have a set of Meade HD 60 that I believe are very similar to the Celestron Excel LX. If, in truth, the Celestron eyepieces are similar, any of them should work well in your scope.

The Meade HDs are very similar (may be exact, I'm not sure) to the Celestron X-Cel LX and I would be confident with either one, price would make the difference there for me.

I have read somewhere that they are made in the same factory. However, I have no way to verify that. I did a comparison between my 25mm HD 60, and Explore Scientific 68 24mm. The ES 24 had a slightly larger field of view and showed more contrast. The HD 60 25mm had a sharper image. Both eyepieces are quite good, in my opinion. The 9mm is also a very good eyepiece that I can count on performing very well and is very sharp.

I would not be surprised at all of the optics inside the Meade and Celestron eyepiece are the same, which just different housings. Coatings might be slightly different though.

As long as they handle reflection well, will be ok.

I received a Celestron x cell - lx 9mm for Christmas. I've only had it out a couple of times but I have enjoyed it. I have an 8" dob (f 5.9) and it has worked well for the couple of hours I have used it. No complaints. In fact this is the first "upgrade" eyepiece that I have, everything else is the "stock" eyepieces. Even though I have not had a lot of experience with it I did not want to use the stock eyepieces anymore - that much of a difference. What I did find with it was that you have to adjust the eye cup (twists up) properly or you get blackouts. However, once adjusted it is fine. I cannot comment on the other eyepieces mentioned but I think the you would be happy with the x-cell.
