    Duh! Order the 30mm!

Otherwise, Bill, you'll have to send the misfit over to me for safe keeping.

It's for the good of your eyepiece collection.

I'd be gnawing the heck out of the bullet while clicking the "add to cart" button.

Default Re: Ordered three Vixen Plossl Eyepieces

The 30mm is ordered. What that does is change things up a bit in my ordering of eyepieces. I have a dozen holes in the eyepiece caddy I made for this scope. At the present time, I have the 25, 17, and 12.5mm Sterling type Plossles, which really pick up dim things very well that other eyepieces seem to blank out. I have the three Bresser 70 eyepieces, which are about the closest match that I can find for matching the coatings of the Sterlings, but they do have five elements. They have the wider field, but give up a little in terms of resolution in the middle, but they do not give up a whole lot and do work with the Barlow I have. I have the Siebert 4X Telecentric Barlow, which is the best Barlow I have owned. This leaves five holes for Vixen Barlows. They do not do as well for the really dim things near the edge of the detection limit of my eyes, but they have excellent contrast and are good, solid eyepieces for general use, but expecially with the Barlow for logical small steps. With the 30mm, I will have to remove the 8mm, but the 30mm in the Barlow will give me a 7.5mm combination as a replacement. The question is, "Will the 30mm and Barlow by better than simply using the 8mm eyepiece?" I will soon know. Going on down the line, I can make it to 160X using the 10mm eyepiece (either the Vixen at 50 degrees, or the Bresser70 at 70 degrees)

In some cases, I think the scope is capable of 180X, but not the 200X that I might get with the 8mm and Barlow. For that, or for finding a very dim object that I cannot find with any of the eyepieces in the caddy, I will have the Meade 5000 series Plossl 9mm eyepiece properly protected in my shirt pocket. I am going to great lengths to protect this eyepiece, because I have depended on it for so much and it is basically not replaceable without simply being fortunate in finding a use one that someone does not want.....highly unlikely in my opinion.

The Sterling 25mm and the Bresser 70-20mm end up having just about the same field of view, with the 25mm being able to pick up slightly dimmer objects but the 20 having some good attributes with a higher magnification and the wider AFOV. Those two sets step down with the eyepieces falling within the next step of the other set, so they compliment each other in a way. The 30mm Vixen will have the widest true field of view at around 3.75 degrees with the 25mm Sterling and the 20mm Bresser 70 coming in at 3.5 degrees.

With all of that, I can take this scope on travels and look for dim objects, open and globular clusters, split double stars about the way a 60mm long refractor can do, and observe the Moon reasonably well. It will do OK with planets, but not like a long refractor can do.

Anyway, that is the plan at this point!
