Default medium power eyepiece for 10 inch F6 dob

hello everyone. Black Friday and cyber Monday is coming and hopefully there will be some sales on eyepieces. I am travelling to USA next week which means I would be able to make a purchase without paying taxes and shipping.

I currently have a 31mm nagler which I will use as a low power eyepiece in a 10 inch F6 dob that I recently ordered.

What would be a good medium power eyepiece which will give me a good TFOV ? I am debating between the 17mm ethos or the 21mm ethos.

    Any suggestions / advice

The Explore Scientific (ES) 20mm 100░ AFOV 2" EP. I own one and it is spectacular. Also look at the ES 18mm 82░ AFOV.

Can't beat the ES82 18mm. You will hear a lot of recommendations for it. Only thing is that the 82 degree series look like they are going to left out of the sale pricing.

oh I see. yes I have seen a lot of good reviews on the 82 18mm ES.

so left out on the sale meaning this eyepiece won't go on sale for black friday or Cyber Monday ?

Looks like this year they are putting the 68, 92 and 100 degree series on sale. Keep an eye on the pricing though, there may be a one day surprise though.

Given the two choices you present, I'd go with the 17mm Ethos; the 21mm is going to be close to the TFOV of your 31mm. Personally, my current DSO lineup is a 31T5, a 13mm and an 8mm Ethos. I also used the same eyepiece configuration years ago in a 12" f/5 dob (same 1500mm focal length as your 10") and I've never felt I was missing anything between the 31T5 and 13mm Ethos. The 13mm Ethos is my most used eyepiece and spends most of the night in the focuser, with the 8mm not far behind. The 31T5 is occasionally in the focuser mostly for extended objects.

    - 31T5 Nagler will give 48x, 1.7deg TFOV, 5mm Exit Pupil
    - 21mm Ethos will give 71x, 1.4deg TFOV, 3.5mm Exit Pupil (too close to the Nagler for my taste, unless you want to replace the Nagler)

    - 13mm Ethos will 115x, 0.87deg TFOV, 2mm Exit Pupil (optimum Exit Pupil, and my personal favorite eyepiece)
    - 17mm Ethos will give 88x, 1.13deg TFOV, 3mm Exit Pupil (should work fine)

When you mention that you use the 31 nagler occasionally, is that when you use it as a "finder" eyepiece ? I am not sure why you mentioned occasionally

currently on my 5 inch dob, I use my 20mm as a finder eyepiece because it gives me the most TFOV. then I power up to my 11mm eyepiece. Sometimes I just stay on my 20mm eyepiece since on my 5 inch dob, a lot of deep sky objects only appear as fuzzies. But the bright messier objects looks great.

so I was thinking of the same idea when I get my new 10 inch dob. Use the 31mm eyepiece as a finder eyepiece and then power up to something else.

What I mean is I use 31T5 for extended objects greater than 1 degree FOV that either won't fit in the FOV of the 13mm Ethos, or is scaled too big and looks better smaller. Examples are the Double Cluster, Veil Nebula, Pleiades, M31, M6, M7 and M8, and so forth; basically any large extended object. Otherwise, the 13mm Ethos spends the majority of the night in my focuser on DSO's. Sounds like you're doing much the same on your current scope with your 20mm eyepiece.

Since my scope rides on a CG-5 mount, I have go-to or use its setting circles, so I don't need a finder eyepiece. But I understand some use finder eyepieces to supplement their finders and the 31T5 will certainly work well in that regard.

I love my 31 mm Nagler, and often I then move to the 18mm 82 deg ES to power up. However I did find that eyepieces with a wide AFOV can draw in extraneous light, which you may find to be an issue. For example my little Plossl collection gives better contrast than wider glass, I think because of the above factor. It's a little ironic that for a better view, one might reach for less expensive glass, suggesting there is a visual price to pay for wider fields. Wide fields make manual target finding easier, and they are appealing to get that wonderful feeling of immersion, even if you do have to glance all around the field to see everything. I guess I'm saying that an inventory with a range of different eyepiece designs may offer the richest overall experience. So, don't limit yourself to the widest AFOV eyepieces you can find.
