    Default Russell Optics 1.25" Konigs

I am curious if anyone has had any hands on experience with the Konigs in an f/5 reflector?

I have a Russell 19mm Konig but I haven't used it in a reflector. I have used it in a number of scopes and find that results can vary from excellent to blah depending on the scope. I own, use, and value numerous Russell eyepieces and the 1.25" 19mm Konig is my least favorite in some scopes, it just depends. My 2" 19mm Superwide Konig 70* is another story.

I have a couple Konigs I previously had used in my 10" Dob. They were all right, and were a step up from what I had used before. Their prices were good. I have moved on to superior eyepieces (at a superior cost!)

I can vouch for the quality of a Russell optics eyepiece. My 65mm super plossl is tops but I've never used that combination you mention myself.

I have used Konigs in f5 and f4.5 reflectors but they were the UO ones. (I've had some Russell eyepieces that were super Plossls and they were fine.)

Konigs are not expected to do well with fast objectives. Mine didn't. They were gorgeous at the center of the FOV (75%) but the stars were smeared in the outer portion. So I sprang for the more highly corrected Panoptics.

I have to say though that the Konigs beat the Pans in the middle, Pans beat Kons off center. Price-performance in favor of Pans overall.

    I have the 1.25" 18mm Russell Optics Research-Grade Koenig Super-Wide. Don't have a f/5 reflector, but I guess, my f/6 Dob is pretty close.

Pros: Central ~60% of FOV is bright and has high contrast which is very pleasing, the EP made of Derlin so is lightweight. Not sure about coatings but look bluish and the reflection is quite bright, maybe just single-coated.

Cons: as it can be expected the outer 40% of the field shows astigmatism at f/6 so its 67*AFOV+ not very beneficial, IMO. Actually, I bought this Koenig for my f/8.9 refractor where it's sharp up to the last ~10% of FOV.

BTW, it barlows well, so the sharp portion of FOV extends up to ~80% at f/6 and to the very edge at f/8.9.

And I should stress I'm talking about exactly what Gary describes as *Research Grade* Koenig made of *Japanese Special Optics* glass. Not sure if RG (JSO) grade glass is available to Gary at this moment, probably it's gone since I don't see such eyepieces in Gary's eBay store. But they are available on the used market from where I actually got my Koenig. IMO, Koenigs, Erfles, Plossls are designed for slower long refractors where they show their best. But it also a matter of preference and I know that many observers like views Koenigs show in reflectors even though not the whole field is sharp.
