Default Short Zhumell Planetary EP review (18 and 14.5MM)

Over Labor day I took advantage of telescopes.com 5% off to get both of these EPs - total price for both shipped was $85 US. They only had the 18 and 14.5MM in stock but I figured why not.

I took them out for a short spin this evening and hit Saturn and the Moon. Even though I would have preferred to also get the 12.5/9MM for more magnification, these eyepieces are wonderful to look through - very sharp, flat images with great clarity.

Even though not magnified as much as I would like, the rings of Saturn were very sharp and clear - the moon was very clear and close - it fit completely inside the 14.5MM EP just barely, but was framed very nicely in the 18MM.

All in all, for $40 a piece, I'm very happy with these (and hope telescopes.com get some of the other sizes in stock soon).

    Congrats on the new glass!

I've the the 5mm in this series and it has been a great eyepiece with close in views of planets, yielding seven moons of Saturn on one evening last year.

For the price point, these are hard to beat for a long eye relief eyepiece.

At first I saw the 20mm mark on the EP and was like "dang it, I ordered an 18 and 14.5!!!!"

Oh wait, 20mm is for the eye relief...

Indeed, these are well performing EPs and for ~$40 new - great buy. I believe they are out of production, so they just selling old stocks. The only way to get shorter FL are to get them used of classifieds or eBay. They and Orion re-brand (Edge-on planetary) come out from time to time on CloudyNights and Astromart. Also, they take barlow quite well, so you can barlow to 7.3mm.

Well, should I have gotten the Zhumell line instead of ES? I just bought the full line of ES eyepieces. Not particularly cheap.

Zhumells are good but ESs are couple of classes higher. I had a couple of Zhumell EPs and sold them in favor of better performers like ES and TV.

I have no illusions that they are in ES class, but for $40 compared to Orion selling them for $99, it's a deal and very nice inexpensive EP.
