Default Looking to add another EP

    Hi,

I'm a relative newcomer to amateur astronomy with an Orion xt8, and I'm looking to add to a limited collection of eyepieces. Here's what I have currently:

    Agena 2" SWA 32mm
    Televue 1.25" 25mm Plossl
    Televue 1.25" 13mm Nagler 6
    Televue 1.25" 3x Barlow

Of those, we most enjoy the 32mm and 13mm EPs since the wide views are amazing. I'm leaning toward a 17mm or 20mm Nagler, since it's quite a gap between the 13mm and 25mm. But...we really, really enjoy using the low power Agena, and the thought of a high quality EP in that range is very enticing. Eventually, we'll go for high magnification, but not yet since we're primarily looking at DSOs, and the 13mm performs very well. Not really a fan of the Barlow, except for viewing planets with the 25mm Plossl. Even there, the 13mm by itself does a better job, in our opinion.

Are the 25mm and greater wide angle Televue or ES models a very noticeable step up from the Agena SWA? It's hard to imagine an even sharper view. Any thoughts on 17mm vs 20mm Naglers? I suppose you can't go wrong with either, given the outstanding quality of the 13mm.

Thanks for any advice, this hobby is great.

Try out the ES82 30mm or ES100 20mm. I own both and have tried them out in a 11" SCT (which I unfortunately had to sell) and more recently in a 10" Dob, the views in both scopes were fantastic with these EPs! A couple other good options if you decide to plug one in the gap between your 25mm and 13mm would be the ES82 18mm or the TV Delos 17.3mm. The Delos is an amazing EP, I don't own the ES 18mm but it also gets rave reviews.

The 20mm ES100 sounds like a very sweet eyepiece, with that 100 degree view. But, at over 2 lbs I'm wondering if it's too heavy for an xt8? The TV Delos also sounds very good as well.

    Thanks for the ideas!

If you like the Naglers why not stick with them. I used to have a set but I decided I prefer the ES 100s and the Televue Panoptics and Delos series. So I sold the Naglers. It's a personal preference thing.

For balancing a heavy eyepiece I use aair of magnets and carabiners and a wrist weight. It's easy to use and cheap counterweight.
