Hi, Im wanting to upgarde an old scope to 1.25 from .965 and was wondering if it would be as simple as getting an adapter like this one?

Depending on the scope you may be able to buy an adapter that threads directly onto the drawtube. Vixen and Baader both make one. I have tried the solomark version of the one you have pictured and the quality was very good.

    Default .965 to 1.25

If you're using a refractor, the best solution is a hybrid diagonal with a .965 nosepiece and a 1.25" eyepiece holder - that way the optical path length stays around the same, so you can still reach focus.

The problem with the adapter you showed is that it moves the eyepiece out a long way - so if you're using it with a Newtonian reflector, where the focal plane is usually somewhere inside the focuser, there's a fair chance that you won't be able to rack the focuser far enough in to reach focus with the adapter. Basically, if you focus the scope with a .965" eyepiece, then you'd need to be able to rack the focuser in further by around the height of the top section of the adapter.

For scopes like Maks and SCTs, that isn't a problem since they have a much bigger focus range. With things that use diagonals, a hybrid keeps the optical path length similar - but for newtonians, unless you're lucky enough to have a lot of spare in-travel, you probably need to look at replacing the focuser with a 1.25" one of similar depth - or, if the focuser tube is wide enough to take a 1.25" barrel, seeing if you can get a replacement 1.25 holder end to replace the .965" one.

Note that if you're using an adapter (rather than a new focuser or holder) the clear aperture is still limited to .965", so that will limit your maximum true field of view - shouldn't be a problem for most eyepieces, since higher magnifications only look at the central part of the image formed by the scope, but may limit you a bit for lowest power views.

    Thanks for the replys.

Apologies I should of given more information, its a Tasco 11T reflector. A focal length of 900mm with a 100mm primary.
    IMG_1216.JPG

Ah I understand, it will push the eyepiece further away.
I also understand the hole will still be small aswell defeating the object on lenses with a larger fov. I wonder if I would be lucky enough to make any gains with my particular scope, I do have 1.25 eyepieces as well as .965.

One benefit from it would be that I could use my laser collimater on it.

What would be a good solution here, ive been told a 1.25 upgrade is defiantly worth it regarding my particular scope.

    Regards

One simple thing to try - point your scope at the moon, and just hold some of your 1.25" eyepieces up to the end of the
focuser, and see if you can manage to focus. If you can, and there's a mm or three spare in travel left over to allow for the
thickness of the adapter, then it might be worth going for the adapter.

If it won't go in far enough to focus, then you'd need to do something more drastic.

With al these connectors the laser will be out especially if you don't have compression rings in other words it will be difficult to centre the laser in the focus tube and will give incorrect reading.
With this attachment you will not be able to focus on infinity it works fine on my 2 Tasco refractors but they have a draw tube and a rack focuser but I don't know your scope that well so you maybe lucky and it will work on my 10 Te I have the .965 pack and it works ok with the converter and using plossl eyepieces the view did not really improve those old H eyepieces are actually quite good I have a 20 ,12.5 and a rather bad 4mm one

I believe the end unthreads from the drawtube and you can use the Vixen or Borg adapters on that scope. You may have to measure things.

    Here is the Vixen ..

And the Borg which is much better quality and has 2 thumbscrews. Baader does not make one. Sorry for the confusion I was tired.
