Default Meade Astrometric - What are the group experiences with this EP?

Wondering how may out there have experience with Astrometric EP's?
Wanting to do some measurement on doubles I obtained the Mead:
Meade Series 4000 MA 12mm Illuminated Reticle Astrometric Eyepiece (1.25")

Not overly expensive & should I take to it there are other options.

We have had too many rainy days since the EP has arrived for actual use but a couple of observations:
    - may need to find a way to dim the reticle further- It is going to be very bright
    - the entire scale will not come into focus (even after focuser adjustment). I can get either the center or outside of the scale to
    focus.

The shipment was packaged very poorly and I'm wondering if these maladies are common to the Meade or it just got beat up during shipment.
If these issues are common are there are DIY remedies known for the issues?
    Moving on.......

I had the same too bright issue with my Celesron RACI. WAY too bright at the DSS. I put two layers of red lens tape over the LED on the illuminator. I'm thinking about adding a 3rd piece.

Interesting, Steve. I have been planning on getting one myself sometime soon. I'm looking forward to seeing what solutions you come up with.

    Steve,

I had one of those and eventually sold it - not because it was in any way faulty, but because it required lots of practice using it and seemed limited due to the illuminator (the over-bright reticle lines were kind of blown out and weren't fine enough for tight measurements). Most likely, I was having to run it too bright due to the lack of dark skies from my backyard. Anyway, I never seemed to have enough time to become proficient with it.

These days, I've gotten pretty good at visually estimating PA and Sep with my C6, or C8 just based upon reading the latest published measurements and seeing what they look like through the eyepiece. In the next year, or so, I want to try the vidcam method of measurement, with lucky imaging.

Are you planning to publish your measurements to the JDSO, or WDS?

Great Idea- the recess has enough space It can be covered. Although I'll have to experiment with the 2nd iteration.

This one is going back, have to see if the uneven focus is standard with this unit. If it is maybe I go the web cam route.... $200+ for the Baader is too much of an investment to start out with - or search the used market for the out of production Celestron or a Baader. BTW found this for anyone who need to replace the LED:Agena Cordless Illuminator for Reticle Eyepieces
