Question Help me move to 2"...

I've been using a C6-N on an AVX for quite some time. My main eyepiece has been the Celestron 8-24mm zoom and it's been fine. Recently, I've been looking to step up my visual game and I picked up a C8 (might sell it for a C9 or C11). I'm looking to step up my eyepieces as well and start building a 2" library. Obviously, I'll need to replace my diagonal. I would like to cover both DSO and planetary, so I know I'll be looking for both high and low powered eyepieces as well. Maybe three or four to start out with. 40mm, 25mm, 10mm, 5mm? I don't know. A good range is my point. My problem is I don't know much about which brands I should be looking at for what. I'm use to paying pretty pennies for good camera lens glass, so I don't expect this to be any different. Quality is always worth the money, but I want to be mindful about diminishing returns as well.

So my questions... What brands should I be looking into for a diagonal that will fit 2" EPs? What about brands or series for the actual eyepieces? Should I be sticking with Celestron or someone else? It would be amazing if I could get a few options as well as rationale as to why they are recommended. I like making informed purchases, so that would help a lot.

Any feedback is much appreciated. Thanks for your time and help. -Rich

Most 2" diagonals seem to be decent optical performers - the main difference is build quality.

I've used several, from budget to Baader, and they've all worked fine.

Dielectric ones have better reflectivity than standard mirrors, and are tougher - but I doubt you'd notice the difference unless you're looking at something right on the edge of detectability.

Some come with interchangeable SCT style (flanged tube with locking ring) and refractor style (2" nosepiece) connectors.

The reply above says it all about diagonals. Regarding ep's I would suggest you look at the Celestron x-cel range. I have a couple and they are used the most. They are really good for the money.

    Hi Rogue,

All my newer 1.25" EPs are Celestron and all my 2" EPs are Explore Scientific. I highly recommend both their 82° and 100° AFOV EPs. I have the 100° 20mm and the 82° 30mm and they are both stunning EPs. Remember that if you do switch to an SCT you should consider a focal reducer as a necessary accessory.

    Cheers,

Alright, I did a little more research and have come up with some EPs that I'm looking at. Basically, I think I'll be pretty happy with three. A high, medium, and low powered EP. I have only been researching the two companies listed below and I know there are a lot more that I could pick from, but these were the ones that kept popping up in my research. I would love more suggestions and, ultimately, recommendations on what you guys like. I've been keeping each EP around the $300 mark but am more than willing to stretch that if there is just a huge advantage to doing so. Keep in mind these will go on a C8 and, eventually, a C9 or C11.

    Low
    • Explorer Scientific 40mm 68º
    • Tele Vue Panoptic 41mm 68º

    Medium
    • Explorer Scientific 24mm 82º
    • Tele Vue Panoptic 24mm 68º

    High
    • Explorer Scientific 11mm 82º (or possibly 9mm 100º)
    • Tele Vue Delos 10mm 72º

    What do you think?

Your spread seems pretty good to me. You might think about adding a 16mm ES or 17.3mm Delos to your line up. I love my ES eyepieces and they work great in my LS8 and C9.25 scopes. I haven't tried the Panaoptics and just recently acquired 4 Delos, 3.5mm, 6mm, 10mm, 17.3mm. But I haven't had a chance to try out the Delos yet. With the sale on TV eyepieces it makes them more affordable now!!

Cool. In the ranges that I'm looking at, what other brands or series should I be looking at?

Explore Scientific and TeleVue are pretty much the top of the heap, if you're good with spending the money on those you really won't find much better. If you're considering a C11 in the future I'd also recommend the 17.3mm Delos, that EP was an absolute gem in my C11 (that I unfortunately had to part with recently). The others in your range are solid choices, you might also consider the ES 82* 30mm, almost the same field of view as the 68* 40mm but at higher magnification. My choices for 2" EPs were the 82* 30mm and 100* 20mm, but the ones you listed will also work well.

i just use the SCT 2" diagonal- it just screws onto the rear cell- i use a focal reducer though-keep in mind the rear cell isnt really a 2" opening either. so let that speak for itself, your mount should hold a future 9.25, i cant see a C11 on the AVX though
