Default Reticle EP is my best EP?

I maybe crazy but there are times I think my 20mm 70 degree AFOV reticle eyepiece is just as good as my really expensive eyepieces.

It has very good contrast and good light transmittance. Am I crazy?

    I'm probably crazy too.

The plossl design typically used in these type of EP's have fewer lens elements than most of the 'fancy' wider FOV EP's. I've always loved quality plossl's for star and planetary viewing. As you said, they usually offer better light transmission and great sharpness and contrast.

There is also a certain sense of familiarity. I am guessing you use that eyepiece a lot for star aligns and such.

You get 'used' to its view, know when its in focus, and what to expect.

I don't think it is familiarity as I really don't spend that much time staring through the reticle eyepiece.

It would appear that the simple design means less glass.

Also a little research and the 20mm plossl in this family is well regarded and might be a sweet spot.

    Thanks for the comments.

I've been wondering if this EP is even a Plossl. A Plossl is 4 elements in two symmetrical cemented pairs and it only provides 50 degrees of AFOV. A modified version of the Plossl adds a 5th element between the two pairs. That's a Masuyama and it only extends the AFOV to 55 degrees.

According to Agena Astro's specification page, that SWA eyepiece is 5 elements in 4 groups. And, with the 70 degree AFOV, it almost sounds like a modified Erfle of some sort. Williams Optics' SWAN series is similar.

Just thinking out loud...if it works well, sharp to the edge, good contrast, no light scatter - that's all that counts

    Cheers,
    Jerry

I do believe you may be correct. At 70* it is most likely an Erfle design of sorts (the image does favor one). Which usually offer a very nice view. I missed the 70 part in the original post.
