    Question Just bought a Barlow

So I was at the camera shop and looking around and asked if they had a 2x Barlow. They had the Celestron Omni 1.25" 2x and that was it. Normal price was tagged $89 but on sale for $59.99 but I talked them down to $37.00

Now my question is the tip of it unscrews, does that allow me to screw it on my eyepieces for 1.5x or whatever it is? And, is it a decent Barlow? Thanks.

There are a good Barlow and yes you can screw the lens on the bottom of your eyepiece for an approximate 1.5x gain in magnification.

I have an older version and I like it. In addition to use of nose lens on EP for ~1.5x you can also use the barrel as filter holder. For instance if you have a pair of polarizing filters you can put one on the barlow barrel and another on EP which makes much easier to adjust brightness level by simply rotating EP. The only issue I have with it that it does not have compression ring so the screw could mark EP barrel.

Hi Steve. I did the exact opposite of what you did. Here is my University Optics eyepiece:

    UO20mm.jpg

Depending on the manufacturer's specifications, you can sometimes remove the front element. In my case, when I unscrewed the 1.5X Barlow in the front of the lens, I then had a 80° 30mm eyepiece. And, from what I have read, you should enjoy your Celestron Omni 2x Barlow for a very long time. I hope this helps Steve, and the best of wishes for many clear skies.

I broke out the new Barlow this morning and used it on Saturn and Mars. I notice when I screw the nose piece into my eyepiece I have to put the eyepiece in the focuser to where it is only inserted about 2/3rds the way in or else it won't focus far enough. I also have to do this with my 30mm eyepiece by itself.

Hi again Steve. Yes, this happens with the longer focal length eyepieces sometimes. I first discovered this back in the 1970's, where I would have to "heist' the eyepiece in the focuser to get a proper focus, because I did not have enough focuser "back travel". UM has the answer with an extension tube. Keep at it Steve, and I hope that you get this all resolved, as well as some very nice skies.

Thanks. I have the extension tube that came with my telescope but it's just a little too long I believe. I've gotten pretty good at pinning the eyepieces in just the right place though.

I have had the same thing happen on my AD10, can't get far enough out to focust and can't get close enough with the extension.
Thought I was going nuts but now at least I have company on the trip.
I just tighten down before the EP is inserted all the way. Going to have to DIY a collar for it

I guess I could take a few thousadnths off of it with some sand paper and a little time but like you, chucking it up a little long seems to do the trick quite well.
