Default Why is ES 14mm 100* more expensive than 20mm 100*?

With the sale on, I was thinking about trying a super-wide angle eyepiece, and noticed the oddity that prices go up as focal length goes up, except for the 14mm, which is more expensive than the 20mm. I was wondering why this is. Is there something special about the 14?

If you notice, the 20mm still says nitrogen purged and hasn't switched to argon purged yet like all of the other 100 degree ES eyepieces. I speculate that they have an over-supply of these that they are still trying to sell off, hence the lower price for the 20.

The 14mm is a big, heavy EP...same size as the 20mm....IMHO, it seems to provide a superior image to the 20mm, and less obvious coma...

Explore Scientific has has some pretty serious price hikes over the last couple of years....THe 20mm Nitrogen purged EP's could very well could be new old stock. Maybe someone here on the forums has an accurate explanation one way or the other... .My 9mm and 20mm are nitrogen purged.. The 5.5mm and 14mm are argon purged...It's all good...

My 100* 20mm is also nitrogen purged, while my 82* 30mm is argon purged. No complaints about either, both are fantastic EPs in my C11! No difference in quality of views between argon or nitrogen purged EPs, argon just happens to be more stable which is why I think they switched to it.

I think 14mm just sells better than 20mm and they are trying to capitalize on that.

PAL77, you were right. I did the obvious, and called Explore Scientific, and they confirmed that the reason was that they have a large stock of the Nitrogen filled EPs, and when they sell tehm off, they will get Ar-foilled versions, with some increase in price. So I did buy one on sale, but haven't had much chance to look through it. From the little time I have spent with it, it looks like a winner. It seems to have less kidney beaning and blackouting than my 40mm 82 degree eyepiece.

Maybe it's because the 14ES-100 is more versatile than the 20ES-100. Even in fast dobs, the latter's more of a low-power, one-trick pony. The 14ES-100, though, will generate a 2-3mm exit pupil "sweet spot" in most dobs, with a nice blend of magnification, image brightness and sky darkness/contrast.

The 14ES-100 seems priced about right. The 20ES-100, though, seems priced low, when compared to the 21mm Ethos. I did a 14ES-100 / 13mm Ethos "Thunderdome"-style death match a few years ago and these eyepieces were very, VERY close.

    Clear Skies,
    Phil
