Default EP suggestions for Orion 12g

I have a virtually new Orion 12g (goto dobs) that I bought secondhand. While in great shape, it came with only a mixture of modest (1.25Ē only) eyepieces that were not the ones originally supplied with the scope. Iím not in a great position to get to an observing opportunity to explore/borrow other eyepieces before I buy, so Iíd like a suggested starting point.

Iíd like wide FOV options. Iím especially interested in good planetary viewing to start, but I want to be able to look to the deep sky as well, when I (rarely) get away from the city and associated light pollution.

Iím interested in the $250 Bresser Eyepiece setó 70 degree FOV that includes several 2Ē EPís, as compared to something like a Baader Click-stop zoom. Iíd look at other options too. Iím just not certain where to start, and one person had suggested the Bresser set was a good deal for decent eyepieces.

If Iím better with a few key eyepieces and a decent Barlow, which are recommended? I donít know much about different 2Ē barrows at all, but that seems like a nice thing to have.

Also, Iím thinking a 90-degree diagonal would be a good idea to have available at some point.

Suggestions appreciated. I donít require an EP kit as such, but if something like the Bresser (or a similar) set makes sense, Iím fine with buying one. New pieces are fine, but used are better, if in good conditions and available. (As when I buy a car, I donít require the ďnew eyepiece smellĒ LOLÖ)

There is no budget limitation as such, but Iím thinking hundreds, not thousands, for now.

    Thanks!

The Bresser 70į EPs are the same as the discontinued Explore Scientific 70į series. You can still find them new here and there though.

I have two of the 2" EPs. They are good eyepieces for the money for slower scopes. I have an F/10 Celestron C8. In faster scopes edge coma will show up.
They also have rather short eye relief, so using them while wearing glasses doesn't work so well.

Diagonals don't work on Newtonian scopes. Not enough back focus.

    Thanks, Scott.

Someone had suggested the diagonal when viewing near the zenith on a scope that tall. I just assumed it was possible. Of corse, as I think about it, near the zenith one's head would be right by the tube with a diagonal, so the diagonal would probably not be entirely helpful. I was just thinking through my options and wanting to buy all at once, as I try and figure out some better eyepieces.

The scope is an f4.9, and I wear glasses so it sounds like three strikes tonight on my ideas.

The good news is I posted and got some info before I ordered a bunch of stuff that I'd be unhappy with.

I'm still intrigued by the Baader zoom idea. I need to borrow one first, but I don't know where one is to borrow...

    Thanks again,

    Richard
