Default Need HELP with EP frenzy

I'm in the process of putting together EPs for my new Nexstar Evolution 8 and would like the swarm here to help me. You will notice, I'm not the patient type :-)

One line of thought is buying a Vernonscope Brandon set with 8, 12, 16, 24 and 32mm.

The other line of thought is going all in with a .63 focal reducer and either Pentax xw and/or Vixen SSW in 7, 10, 14 and 20mm and pimp that up with a 25mm ES 100* and a 30mm ES 68*

And did I mention I could get a good deal on a mint 12mm Delos?

The most worrying thing is - I haven't really started and it's already spinning out of control.

    Can anyone relate?

    Cheers!

Yes I can relate on a much smaller scale. I'm a newb and already ordered a 15mm and 6mm but they are Agena Enhanced WA ep's at $46 per to go with my humble scope. I tend to research to the max on a new hobby and get sucked in but at I'm doing it according to my cost ceiling. Who knows, down the road a ways I may upgrade everything. Anyway, these forums can really get you to spend money!

The Vixen eyepieces are very good, I would recommend them. I have used the 10, 14, and 20 and plan on getting some myself.

The 12mm Delos would give you a good magnification for planets and globs, plus I've never read a bad review on any Delos EP so I'd say go for the Delos. The ES 30mm gets good reviews and should be a nice low power option for your scope, but I think the ES 20mm 100* would compliment the 30mm better than the 25mm 100*, also I've read a few questionable reviews on the 25, if it were me I'd save a bit of money and get the 20. With a 30, 20 and 12 you'd have a really good start on a collection of quality EPs with magnifications of 68x, 102x, and 169x. The 7mm you mentioned would probably be too much power in your scope for anything except high power moon views, a 9mm or 10mm would likely be more useful for the high end of your range, the 10mm Vixen you mentioned would be a good option for this range. You could add something around 8mm later on if viewing the moon at high power is something you enjoy, otherwise, anything lower than a 9 or 10 would probably be too much power for anything else on most nights.

Also, so you know, you'll need a 2" diagonal for the ES 30 and ES 20. Most folks with SCTs upgrade to a 2" diagonal to have that larger field of view which is available in the lower power wide angle EPs.

Yeah, the 2" diagonal is already on the list, as well as the focal reducer.

    Got Money...???

If so look into the Denkmeier S1 P/S 2 inch diagonal...solid...caps are solid aluminum, and the diagonal has both a built in 2x barlow and a 0.66 (not 0.63) focal reducer built in.. The Denk is actually 3 items in one ....I would not be without mine ...

Most of my eyepieces are Pentax's a 8.5 XF and 10 14 and 20 mm XW's (all 1.25 inch eyepieces) and most of my lower power Eyepieces are Televue Panoptics 27, 35 and 41 mm I also have a 31 Proxima that gets lots of usage... (all 2 inch eyepieces ......

IF you get the 7 mm you MAY be able to use it on the moon a few nights each years if you are lucky...it would be way too powerful under my normal skies to get much use at all from the darn thing......

My 27 31 and 35 mm (along with the Denks Focal reducer) seem to always be in the scope 3 different magnifications as well as 3 different FOVs from each individual eyepiece by just pushing a lever with no need to touch the darn eyepiece at all.... Refocusing however takes a while... there is no free lunch lol

Looks like an awesome piece of gear that was not on my radar yet. And I don't even think it's that expensive - I could save on the barlow and the focal reducer. Should total to almost the same as the S1.

I hope no one minds me butting in here. I have one question on the Denkmeier S1 P/S:

I noticed on one site the statement of, "Three instant magnifications and a 65 degree apparent field with a single eyepiece is at your fingertips." I'm scratching my head a bit here wondering if this limits the EP AFOV to 65*, and what that exactly means for using with 82* EP's?
~Frankie~ My mind: Always on...Slightly off.

Good question, but unfortunately way too complicated for me. The 65* probably relates to the focal reducer and not the built in Barlow. As far as I understand the switch, it's either Barlow or reducer, anything else would not make sense.

That said, I truly appreciate the help, guys! Just ordered a Denkmeier diagonal with power switch - the don't do the original S1 anymore. And Bob, if my wife asks how much it was, I'll tell her it's your fault :-)

As for the EPs, I'm inclined to take up the advice and settle for a 10mm SSW, a 20mm XW and a 31 ES 82* for starters. Still thinking about that 12mm Delos, but with the Denkmeier it kinda feels redundant?
