    Default Eyepiece question

Tonight was an amazing night for me. I had a couple of viewing sessions, one around sunset and again around midnight:30.

During the latter, I was able to see Jupiter (1st time) and 3 of it's moons. I found it with the 30mm that the Zhumell Z10 comes with, and then I switched to my Meade Zoom lens. With the Meade Lens, I could never get Jupiter to look like more than a star (looked alot like Beatelgeuse). I switched to the Zhumell 9mm (and then with barlow) and was able to see the banding and 3 moons with no issue. I read reviews on the Meade Zoom lens, and really didn't set my expectations too high. I was hoping to use it as a gauge to see what power lenses I would primarily use before I sink money into better lenses. Is this normal for this lens? The reviews seemed alright, and Jupiter was high and bright, and I don't think I was asking too much of it.

    Thanks for any feedback.

p.s. Scope was collimated and had had hours to adjust to temp.

A 9 mm bar lowed was most likely a little much ,Seeing conditions would have to be outstanding .
Not sure what your F/? Is but you was most likely pushing around 280x.

Sounds like the Meade was stuck at the 24mm slot. But even with 24mm, you should still see detail. I used my 30mm tonight and saw detail. Can you verify if zooming in/out, was the view changing?

The view was changing. While I was laying in bed last night, I remembered I actually had moved my scope back in and took it back out last night because I wasn't sure if the cloud cover was going away, so there is a chance it wasn't temperature adjusted. I'm going to give it another go to make sure it wasn't operator error. (highly possible!)

    Thanks yall

The Meade 4000 series 8-24mm zoom eyepiece is the best of the zooms below $100. I've got 'em all.

Sounds like you figured it out while sleeping.

I actually made it back out tonight. I am still having issues seeing through it, but I don't think it is the eyepiece. Stars tonight were a nice pinpoint, although quite a bit more dim than a single powered lens. I think I am having eye relief issues with this lens maybe. I spend much of my time so far in my 2 inch 30mm that came with the scope which is easy to see through, so I could also being trying to compare Apples to Oranges. I think with my very strong glasses prescription and my astigmatism, I am going to have to purchase 1 or 2 , two inch lenses to view out of.

I have the same vision problems as you. I have a strong Rx and an astigmatism. But I prefer to view without my glasses. I have also switched to mainly 2" lenses and they have worked well with either my glasses or not. My astigmatism doesn't seem to be any problem with any lens. I don't remember my # so it may be low.
I may go back to using my glasses since I have a Telrad and refer to charts a lot. So putting the glasses on for the Telrad then taking them off for the lens and then back on for the charts is getting to be a chore.

I also have a strong Rx and bad astigmatism in my dominant eye. Views are much better using my nondominant eye (left) even wearing glasses.
