Default Baader Hyperion Mark III Zoom 8-24

    Hello,

I just got back into astronomy with a Meade Infinity 102mm Alt-AZ scope for Christmas (FL600mm, F5.9)! So far I love it as it is very portable and offers very crisp views. I've been doing a lot of research on accessories and I would like to buy the Baader Hyperion Mark III zoom 8-24mm eyepiece. I understand from reading the forums that there is some compromise of optics for the convenience but I love the idea of an all in one eyepeice. That being said, I came across a post from about a year ago where two members mentioned having this eyepiece, and that after a few years the zoom mechanism "froze" and it was basically a fixed eyepiece at whatever setting it was on. There was some talk of contacting Baader to see if/how they would rectify the situation but I did not see any follow up on that. Can anyone give me additional info on this eyepiece and the freezing problem, and whether there was a solution/resolution? Also, any thoughts on how this would perform with my particular scope? Thanks!

I have to say that is the first time I'd heard of that issue with the Mk-III. I used to have one a few years back, and the only thing I recall about it was that with use the "click stop" aspect sort of went away. It still zoomed, but you didn't get that positive feedback "click" at the designed locations. I didn't see that as an issue really. The reason I tired of it was the optical compromises you mentioned. I tried my first 82° Explore Scientific eyepiece and fell in love with both the wider and much better views afforded over the Hyperions in my f/4.5 and f/5 dobs. So I divested myself of my Hyperions (zoom included) and now have several of the ES line. But that is another story not related to your question. I hope someone can come up with something on that, as that is a new one on me.

I have the Hyperion Zoom on my EdgeHD so I can't say anything about the Meade you have. I will say that freezing can happen to any zoom lens and I'm sure it's happened in the past. I don't think it's much to worry about. The Hyperion Zoom has many, many happy users that have hours and hours of observing using the eyepiece. It's warranted for 2 years I believe so that should wring out an problems. Like any zoom lens it is a compromise but it hold up very well were ever it's used. Good luck and clear skies.

I do not have the Baader zoom.
I have a Celestron. But I love a zoom eyepiece for viewing.
I'd say go for it. I think you'd really like being able to pull an object in to your eye for a closer look.
I do. And I trust Baader for quality.

I did wind up getting this eyepiece and it has exceeded my expectations! Took it out last Sat morning to look at the Venus/Saturn conjunction....it performed splendidly! I focused more in Saturn, and at 150x with using the 8mm setting in a 2x Barlow Saturn was still crisp in the eyepiece! Turned it on Jupiter right after that, as it was nice and high in the sky.....it was spectacular! I saw details that I have never seen before, and again at 150x it was crisp in the eyepiece! Can't wait to get out again under clear skies! Thanks!

My favourite eyepiece ! I did receive a faulty one to start with, a black spot in the optics but sent it back and the new one is perfect !
