Default Need help choosing RACI or Telarad and 2 good 30mm and 10mm EPs!

Hello guys, I am patiently waiting the arrival of my new GS 2x ED barlow that is compatible with 1.25" and 2" EPs. I have a XT10 (f/4.7)dob with a 25mm Plossl. When I came back from vacation my finder scope was missing. So I need to purchase a finderscope asap! It is quite hard to observe with no finderscope. A am stuck between a RACI and a Telerad. I am new to astronomy and I am still mastering the art of star hopping. I also would like to purchase a good 28-30mm(with nice good fov) and 9-10mm EP around $60-100 a piece. I am looking at a 28mm Orion Deep View, how do you feel about this piece? Please tell me what to buy there are so many options and your opinions mean everything to me. I also wear glassea and I am 23 years old.

I'm no expert on EPs, but for your finder issue, I recommend... both! With just a RACI, it might be a little too much power to figure out where you are in a constellation as a beginner. The Telrad will get you in the right area, zone in with the RACI, then the EP is next. RACI + Telrad is an amazing combo.

A RACI and a telrad, from my experience, compliment each other quite well. I say get both!

If you can only get one for star hopping purposes, though, to me the RACI would be the most useful. With the RACI you can actually see the dimmer stars necessary for accurate and pinpoint starhopping. About the best value for a RACI out there is this one: High Point 8x50 Right Angle Finderscope w/ Bracket - FRA850

It's a quality RACI with a good aperture and an excelllent cost. This one is manufactured by GSO and branded as Highpoint Scientific by Highpoint Scientific.

A telrad compliments a RACI nicely in that you can use the telrad to sight in and center your brighter stars very easily, and then move to the RACI for further starhopping.

That's my method anyway. Other folks prefer one over the other and do well with either.

Only thing that I dislike about telrads is the uncomfortable positions one must assume to see through them.

That being said I do use both, but lately when not at a star party my laser pointer has taken its place.

Instead of getting two EPs for $60-100 apiece I'd recommend using your current EP budget on just one quality 2" EP. The Explore Scientific 28mm 68* EP is on sale for $202 right now and would work great with your scope. With the fast f/4.7 optics of your scope you would probably find the views from a less expensive 2" EP like the deep view somewhat disappointing. You could always add a higher power EP like the 9mm X-Cel LX at some point down the road when funds allow, better to build up your EP collection slowly with quality EPs than to rush it and wind up with less desirable results. Unfortunately your fast f/4.7 scope is going to be rather picky about the quality of 2" EPs with wider fields, it's not a defect with the scope or the EP, just the way that the optics work. With a good 2" EP your scope is more than capable of spectacular deep sky views of the Messiers and numerous other DSOs.

Thank you for your great suggestions, I swear this hobby would be much more difficult and frustrating if I didn't have you guys to ask questions to. I have done some research and I decided to go with the RACI and the ES 28mm *68 EP, but I will have to wait untill Friday to purchace because the cost will be much more than anticipated. I want to eventually get a Telrad too. Thanks guys!
