    Default 3x Barlow on a Celestron Regal M2 100ED

    Folks,
Am considering using the Xcel-x lx 3x Barlow on a Celestron Regal M2 100ED for astronomy, any thoughts on any drawbacks to this setup ? I'll install it between the scope and the eyepiece it comes with. I am also going to be doing some astrophotography with thismsetup.
    Thanks

Hello and welcome to our forum!

With your f/5.5 focal length, a 3.0 Barlow may give you more magnification you will want. I got a 3X focal extender for my 80mm f/5 achromatic refractor and can so seldom use it. I'd suggest you try, then buy. If you can't get to a star party where you might be able to try one, contact a good dealer who will agree to let your return it in exchange for a 2.5 or a 2.0X Barlow.

There are factors to consider. Will you be viewing/imaging in a dark location where sky conditions will allow heavy magnification? Is your mount good enough to be able to give you a stable platform?

You may want to consider spending a little more money on a good focal extender such as:
Focal Extenders | Explore Scientific USA . These are deeply discounted right now from dealer's stock only, as I understand. Here's a good thread that compares Barlows and F.E.'s:

BTW, Don Pensack is a great dealer to work with. He knows his optics very well and will work with you.

Let us know what you decide to do and how it goes, please.

Too much barlow there my friend. You will find a 2X barlow a much more useful piece of kit.
