    Default 24mm/25mm Eyepiece in F4.7 10" Dob

    Hi All!

Since my recent scope upgrade and the subsequent increase in FL to 1200mm, I am in need of a 24/25mm EP. I really want to stick with 1.25" (due to barlow, filters etc), so that rules out my love of the ES82* EPs. I have narrowed it down to:

    Celestron X-Cel 25mm 60* aFOV
    Explore Scientific 24mm 68* aFOV

The Celestron is about £70 delivered, the ES is £140.

I already have the 5mm & 7mm X-Cels and have no issues with them, I do love my 4.7mm, 8.8mm & 14mm ES82* though. I realise I have a fast scope, and I must admit, I am leaning towards the ES68*, but does anyone have any experience with the X-Cel 25mm in a fast scope. Both these EPs will give a magnification of about 50x, so the FOV will be 1.36 degrees in the ES and 1.25 degrees in the X-Cel. The burning question I suppose is the ES68 twice as good (as it is twice as expensive) in a fast scope!

    Thanks

Hi Tel.,.,I can't help with info about the X-cels.,.,is the ES "twice" as good.,,probably not.,.just a little better.,,probably.,I've heard good reports on the X-cels.,.it is hard deciding.,,I just got a 36mm EP that I paid twice as much for as I could have gotten another brand for.,.,I wanted to be fairly certain that I would be pleased with what I got.,,do I want to compare it to a cheaper EP to see if I paid too much.,NO!!.,good luck.,.,O+O

Like Davy, I have not used the X-Cel line, but have heard good things about them. Nor have I used the ES 68 line, but I do own several of their 82 line, with which I am totally happy. Regarding the ES 68 series, its the 28mm I've heard the most complaints about, just FYI. Personally I would prefer to have the 68 deg AFOV over the 60 deg at the magnification level you'd be getting. Apparently the X-Cel is equivalent to the Meade HD 60 25mm. Here is a link to some chatter basically asking the same thing you are, which may be of help. Good luck with your decision.

Since you're wanting to stay at 1.25", I'll report that my Baader Hyperion 68* AFOV 24mm works well with my (closed tube) 10" Dob. I get a TFOV of 1.31* at 52x. ~$130 US

That's good to hear John. Back when I had Hyperions, during my research, the vast majority of comments I read were that the 24mm Hyp was the runt of the litter as far as performance in a faster scope. That is why I never bought one. I did like the 21mm however. Perhaps they have addressed the issues that were involved, but since I've never looked through one I can't say for sure. Anyway, here is another link with chatter about the Hyp 24 vs the ES 68 24 that might prove useful for the OP.

    Thanks for the link, Alan.

I think all eyepieces in the 24-25mm range get mixed reviews because that seems (at least for me) to be the tipping-point between 2" and 1.25" choice of eyepieces. Many don't drop down to 1.25" for more power until around 17-18mm. In my case, I drop to 1.25" at 24mm.

While the Hyperions will work either way, I use my 24mm in 1.25" mode… opting for 2" for everything above that point. It's just personal preference really.

Yeah, depending on the AFOV, there is that line in the sand at which 2 inch becomes desireable. Since I am using 82 AFOV, I like having the 2 inch format in the 24mm and even the 18mm. And of course, we enter into the realm of personal preferences and tolerances when talking about how much edge distortion (be it EP astigmatism or mirror induced coma) one will accept. When I get home next week, I have a used-like new Paracorr T2 waiting for me. Looking forward to seeing what it can do for me in cleaning up the FOV, as well as that pesky field curvature in the ES 82 14.

Thanks all for all your experiences! (That is why I love coming here!)

After creating a little spreadsheet, I have gone for an 18mm to fill the gap - I went for the X-Cel - it will give me 67x mag and 0.9 degree true FOV with an exit pupil of 3.83. The reason I went for the X-Cel is mainly price, as I love all my ES eyepieces, but realised that at the moment I can't really justify another £140 (Well I can, but he wife will probably go a bit loopy!) after spending over £1000 on a scope and bits! I'm going to keep my eye out for a decent 2nd hand 25mm ES60* and see if I can get it under the radar

    Thanks again!

    Clear skies to you all

Glad you settled on something Tel. Yeah, one really does need to watch the budget at times as it is easy to get carried away in the heat of things. I look at it as a hobby only, not a career, so I never saw the advantage of getting into a financial bind over it.
