Lightbulb Harbor Freight Aluminum Case and X-Cel LX EP's.

Just received 3 Celestron X-Cel LX eyepieces so I went to Harbor Freight and picked up the 11"x 7"x 4" (I)nside (D)emensions aluminum case for $15.99 USD.
I was lucky and received a quantity of pluck foam and egg crate foam from a friend in the communications industry witch worked out great.
Keeping the EP's in their bolt cases and fitting them into the case with room for the 25mm X-Cel LX looks like it will work out just fine.
I still have options to move the EP's, add and subtract foam around in the case as I have not glued it in yet.
I will not be traveling long distances from our home to observe so the case should be adequate for the job.

That looks like it'll be perfect for your needs! Does the case from Harbor Freight not come with pluck foam? I'm going to need one of those also.

How do you like the quality of the case?

The smaller ones don't come with the foam. You can get larger ones which do come with pluck foam.

I did something similar, perhaps a little more expensive. I bought a briefcase at Kmart and some 1/2" ethafoam from Tap Plastics. Ethafoam is the white foam TeleVue EPs come cradled in. I glued layers of foam together with 3M spray adhesive, then cut out openings for my eyepieces with a jig saw, though a serrated knife works just as well. It turned out pretty nice, though the white foam is a bit glaring at night.

Lightbulb Re: Harbor Freight Aluminum Case and X-Cel LX EP's.

No pluck foam in this small case but one of the larger cases (I can't remember for sure if it's the silver or black one) comes with pluck foam and the dividers. Hmm...quality of the small case is just ok but not great. It has a thin foam lining on the inside witch is nice. It is great to hold EP's in and carry them out to the backyard from the house and will travel in the back of our SUV to a dark site just fine. But you would never want to take this case as checked baggage on an airline that's for sure. Actually none of the Harbor Freight aluminum cases are made to travel on an airline as checked baggage but they are good to hold EP's in around the house or travel in your auto to a dark site. And speaking of the larger cases they are indeed "large" at least to me. That's what I went to get at HF but I wasn't happy with the size of them at all. The smaller case was right next to them and it was perfect for the 4 X-Cel LX's I plan to use the case for. The small case could hold 7 of the X-Cel LX's in their bolt cases with 3 on each end and one in the middle and that's with the pluck and egg crate foam installed. For $15.99, same day delivery and no shipping It will suit my needs just fine.

Thank you for your insights/comments. Like you I'd buy the smaller case for convenience and carrying. The closest HF store from us is 80 miles away so I'll buy one (or 2) online and save on gas. Nice post!

Another image of the new X-Cel LX's, bolt cases and case from earlier today that shows the size of the EP's.

    Hey Cherokee,

WOW, same case, same foam, same EPs. Great minds think alike! And they just opened a new Harbor Freight 2 miles from my house! Some times you just get lucky.

    Clear skies,
