Default Zeiss Victory Diascope 30x/40x f=12.8mm eyepiece ordered

    Hello all,

thanks to the price drop Zeiss Okular 30x/40x Plössl-Okular: Okular Preisvergleich - Preise bei idealo.de , I have ordered this little jewel Victory DiaScope from ZEISS .

The Zeiss Victory line technologies are well known for their excellence, and for the elsewhere not achieved transmissivity, and hence the brightest views, especially for the blue wavelengths of light below 500nm. This is important for the faint nebulae emitting the light on the H-Beta line at 486nm, as well as for the reflection nebulae. With the focus length of f = 12.8 mm, this eyepiece fills a gap in my arsenal between the Swarovski and the short focus Pentax XW eyepieces. The apparent field of view of 68° is still acceptable.

There is also one more reason to go for the eyepieces designed for the refractor spotting scopes. As it turned out with the Swarovskis in my arsenal, these eyepieces have been generally optimized for the fast refractors to decrease their residual chromatic aberration, or at least not to add more to the CA coming from the front lens assemblies. This makes the Swarovski and Zeiss eyepieces an interesting alternative to the most of the astronomy eyepieces, when it is about choosing the eyepieces for the fast achromatic refractors.

The eyepiece will require an adapter for the astronomy telescopes, see the item 245 4502 in Zeiss Diascope kompatible Okulare und Adapter bei Baader Planetarium - Zubehoer, Sektion 25

    Best,

    JG

Beautiful eyepiece, JG. No doubts about its high quality! That looks like a really good price, too. 281€ is a lot better than the $450-$470 price they go for over here.

    Hello all,

the Zeiss eyepiece f= 12.8mm has finally arrived.

The first light on a chimney test on the 6" achro refractor F=750mm in comparison with the Pentax XW f=10mm and Swarovski f=10.2mm:

Transmissivity: both the Pentax XW and Zeiss show practically the same brightness when the Eps will be held against the skies. Zeiss may have a very little edge, if any, over the Pentax XW. The Swarovski is slightly behind.
Sharpness and resolution of the spider fibers on the chimney: The Swarovski shows the finest details, followed by Zeiss, the Pentax XW is slightly behind.
Chromatic aberration: Both the Zeiss and the Swarovski suppress well the chromatic aberration on axis, leaving a very faint yellowish hue. Swarovski shows a narrow and faint bluish fringing increasing towards the rim of the FOV. Zeiss adds to the narrow faint blue fringing a narrow reddish fringing, also increasing towards the rim of the FOV. Hence, regarding the chromatic aberration, the Zeiss follows the Swarovski. The Pentax XW shows more chromatic aberration.

The Zeiss f=12.8mm will fill the gap on the difficult DSOs between the Swarovski f=16mm on one side, and the complementary EPs, the Swarovski f=10.2mm and Pentax XW f=10mm, on the other side.

As with most of the spotting scope eyepieces, the Zeiss requires an adapter to 2".

    Clear skies,

    JG
