Default Barlow or Powermate for AP

    Hi All

I am curious about what would be more recommended for DSO AP, a Barlow or a Powermate?

My uneducated understanding of a barlow is that is increases the focal length of the scope, which to me also means that it increases the F/ which isn't great for long exposure AP. Does a Powermate do the same thing or does it magnify the image without changing the speed of the scope? Or, is a powermate really just an improved barlow?

The reason I ask is that my AT65EDQ is great for AP, I love the results, but the FoV is really large and generally my subjects are really small in the final image. I would like to be able to have a larger view of my subject at the source rather than cropping and zooming the final image. That being the case, and if a Powermate is a recommended way to achieve this, would a 2X or 5X be more recommended?

    Thanks for any info
    Kris

    Call this a bump!

The Powermate uses sufficiently different optical elements to be considered a somewhat better and different animal than is the Barlow.

    The Powermate is better.

But as to which Powermate is best? I don't know. I'd think it would depend on what you are trying to image - and what you are imaging with.

So, for instance, if you were imaging with the Celestron C8 and it happens to be an EdgeHD version - it would be unwise to use either a 2x Barlow or a 2x Powermate with the 0.63x focal reducer. You'd have superior optics at about the same focal length if you just didn't use the reducer or the Powermate.

With your 65mm? I really don't know. It might help if you told folk what sensor you are using (and its specs) and give an example DSO - some are huge and some are tiny.

I'm betting, however, that you will eventually want to have 2x, 3x and 5x Powermates.

Others will likely follow with better advice.

I have both barlows and Powermates, the barlows havent been used in years. Really the only powermate I use is a 2.5x, I have a 5 also, but it can only be used it the most optimum of skies/conditions.

A Powermate is an image magnification device that doe not "push" the exit pupil of an EP outward.
This ONLY really maters with very wide AFoV EPs and only maters to really discriminating observers.
The typical observer could obsere for a lifetime and never see the subtle differences.

I happen to have an PM (2X 2") but I think for most observers it falls into the "either one works just fine" catagory.
