    Default Advice, thoughts, opinions?

Doing the math on my scope, I'm thinking that a high quality 13mm eyepiece may be a great upgrade. Normal magnification would be close to 100x, which is in line with the "useful" figure. The use of a 2x Barlow would bring me close to the theoretical max, but with lots of eye relief. In evaluating this idea, I've narrowed the options to the Baader Planetarium Hyperion and the Orion Stratus Wide-Field. Both seem to receive high ratings, and have similar specs/FOV.

The problem question that came to mind was, "what about 200x natively?" In searching the forums, I came across repeated recommendations for these eyepieces:

Russell Optics & Machine - Quarter Inch

I must admit, the 6.7mm Super-Wide Konig looks great on paper. It would let me hit max mag with minimum light lost, at the expense of being a one trick pony.

    What would you recommend?

Let me supplement my question with the following info.
    * I have the Celestron eyepiece kit, but have had difficulty with the practically nonexistent eye relief on the smaller diameters.
    * I have the Celestron 8mm-24mm zoom but have gotten clearer views with my 25mm and 17mm units.

The issue can be summarized thusly: given a 4" Mak, would a 6.7mm EP be overkill?

Well, this is a somewhat unilateral discussion...

After significant research, I'm leaning toward the 13mm Baader. In playing with a telescope magnification calculator, I found that the .5mm exit pupil from a 6.7mm eyepiece on my 4SE may be problematic. Furthermore, the 100x native magnification on the 13mm is likely to be much more useful under average seeing conditions. I can still attain max mag via my 2x Barlow, so I think I've got a winner...

    Hi,

I've just checked the specification of your Mak and I see is an F/12.99. So you are correct that a 13mm eyepiece will give you your normal "maximum" magnification. As you are probably aware, telescope manufacturers usually state twice the primary diameter in mm as the maximum, so 204x in your case. (I've just read one suppliers site that claims 240x!).

I think you may be worrying a little too much about getting to the manufacturers 204x. I have a 127mm Mak that I use with an 8-24mm Hyperion zoom. My Mak is an F/11.8 and sure enough, more often than not, the zoom is often set at 12mm for the best views. I've had a couple of nights only of viewing that was good enough to use the zoom down to the 8mm stop (188x). In order to reach my 254x theoretical max, I think I'm going to have to take it up an arid Mexican mountain or somewhere!!

I'd agree with your plan for the Baader 13mm. Barlowing it to 6.5mm will only be rarely possible. Have a look at getting the adjustment rings.

    Alec.

    Awesome!! Thanks for your response!

I didn't even know about the fine tuning rings, that's really cool... so, 13mm Hyperion it is

To follow up on this thread, I wanted to offer a review of my new 13mm Baader eyepiece! I have to say, it is a real beauty. Quite a bit of weight to it, but the fit and finish are extremely good. Feels very solid.

Optically, this is the best eyepiece in my set, bar none. The units in the Celestron kit are great, but this Hyperion design is a show-stopper. Its 68 degree apparent field of view is over 30% bigger than the Plössl 13mm piece. Panning across the night sky with the Baader seemed so much more expansive, with crystal clarity & sharpness edge to edge.

Now for the AWESOME part. When paired with the 4SE, this particular 13mm is just about perfect for solar and lunar observation! Both targets appear optimal in size, occupying nearly all of the viewing area in stunning detail.

As previously mentioned, 13mm achieves about 100x on the 4SE. I've found this magnification level is rock-solid for average seeing conditions. One can add a 2x Barlow for 200x, which is theoretically pretty close to the very best a 4" scope can deliver. While watching Luna, however, I was surprised to learn that swapping 2x for 3x Barlow still yielded good results.

In testing, I did find that the Celestron 8-24mm zoom is a great counterpart to the Baader 13mm. Between these two alone, a 4SE owner could make do comfortably. Even so, the 8 and 32mm Celestron kit pieces have their place.

Well, I'm a real happy camper. Just wanted to share the experience!

Wow just checked the price from a local supplier on the hyperion ep here in South Africa, seems I will have to take a second bond on my house to afford one of those!

    So enjoy!
