Had to stop and think about this for a minute or 2...But I honestly can say the second part of your question (which can't you live without) is easy.. In my case I can do without every single ONE of my eyepieces and still enjoy myself ...

    Now onto specific eyepieces
I purchased my first scope in the early to mid 1950's as a Cub Scout ... and now 60 or so years later I can say I've owned a lot of eyepieces in my life (as well as telescopes) and not a single one of them ever impressed me enough to make me even think I would never ever sell it or replace it ... Add to that is the simple fact that over the years my eyesight has changed enough so that an eyepiece that worked well for me 10 years ago may today be unsatisfactory

Bottom line is : Guess it seems that I've spent my entire life in this hobby SEARCHING for what I want tomorrow even though I am satisfied today...and better off then I was yesterday ...

BTW...The same can be said of telescopes...

I really, really, like my ES 100* 20mm. Its the newest in my ES collection and it seems to have the best contrast out of the other ones. Don't get me wrong, my other ES EP's are great but the 20mm seems to stand out more than my 100* 9mm and 82* 30mm.

Right now it's a tie between my ES 20mm 100* and my ES 14mm 100*. It depends on whether I am initially finding something (20mm) or teasing out the details (14mm) and also the size of the object. My telescope details are in my signature.

My favorite completely depends on what I'm looking at and which scope I'm using. I really don't have a "favorite" but I do have 2 or three that get the most use.

I use a TeleVue 41mm Panoptic and I really like that eyepiece, but only in my 14" LX-200. I don't believe I've actually ever put that eyepiece in my NP101 refractor. If I don't need a wide field, then I grab *either* the TeleVue 21mm Ethos or the 13mm Ethos ... and it really depends on the seeing. But that's only in the LX-200 (which has a focal length of around 3550mm -- even with the 41mm the true field of view is only 47 arc-minutes from edge to edge.)

In the TV NP101 refractor, the same 41mm eyepiece would have about a 5º true field of view. The scope is too new to decide which eyepiece gets the most use, but so far it's an 8mm Ethos.

In the solar scope, there's no need to see anything beyond the disk of the sun (actually... you can't see anything beyond the disk of the sun... because even if there were background objects you'd never be able to see them through the filters.) So it turns out, my favorite eyepiece is a zoom, but it's basically a plossl... not a wide view eyepiece.

My Hyperion 8-24mm zoom has replaced my EP collection, with the possible exception of a 32mm Plossl. I love the long eye relief and the simplicity of a zoom, and I'm one of those people who doesn't enjoy anything wider than about 70* anyway. I may add a 2" barlow at some point, but I really like the minimalist approach.

17mm Stratus at this point. In my 10" Dob, it gives me a 3.5mm exit pupil for good views, and it's 1* true field makes it handy for star-hopping on the charts in the Messier Marathon book (which I highly recommend as a great beginner/intermediate DSO finding exercise).

I do also use my 8mm for planetary, and I've had it longer, but I think the 17mm is going to become the new workhorse. Since I got it, it's been used the most. I feel kinda bad, because I really haven't use the 24mm much at all...

I only have a few EPs and a Barlow... So my favorite one, like above is my Celestron 8-24mm zoom. Even though I am likely to switch to my 9mm when zoomed to 8, or my 25mm when zoomed to 24; it gives me all the other 'in between' magnifications where sometimes viewing is best- without the added expense of a bunch more EPs. My only gripe is that I wish it was about 2" shorter

Celestron 93230 8 to 24mm 1.25 Zoom Eyepiece. It's $50, it's not too bulky, great eye relief, lots of light come through. I often combine it with a televue 2x barlow.

    Scope: 130mm f/5 celestron newt.
