Default Eye Pieces & Plossl/Super Plossl

    Hello Friends,
So now I have a scope that can reach out there and suck down a respectable amount of light (Zhumell Z8 8" Dobsonian). This scope came with a 9 mm and 25 mm 1.25" eyepiece and a 26 mm 2.00" eyepiece. The stated focal length is 1200 mm.
I was wondering about the focal properties and equations relating to eyepieces as well as the optical benefits of these $400.00 Super Plossl eyepieces I see advertised in the magazines.
    Thank you in advance. James

    $400 Super Plössl?

A typical Plössl, Super Plössls included, usually have a field of view of 50-52° and one of the more expensive and widely available are made by Tele Vue, but they usually only go for ~$100 a piece. Typically the eyepieces that you are going to find advertized in magazines that cost $400 are usually eyepieces with a wider field, between 82° and 100°. These eyepieces are much more complex than the commonly produced Plössl and have many more glass elements.

It has some very nice descriptions of common eyepiece designs and their lens configuration.

$400.00 might be for a full set of Super plossls? It's hard to comment further without knowing which brand. I also own a Z8 and it is a great scope but IMHO the 9mm plossl that came with it is not very good. Something you should know about that scope is it is common for the primary mirror clips to be over tightened from the factory. This causes the mirror to bend ever so slightly but enough to screw things up. It will seem like you can never quite achieve a perfect focus and when you turn the focus off just a bit the image will look more like a triangle than a circle. Once I figured that out and loosened the screws it was like a whole new scope!
