    Default End of an Era?

For those who love orthoscopic eyepieces. University Optics only has the remaining stock of the old volcano top abbe orthos. The company that has manufactured those volcano tops closed its doors on Dec 31, 2012....too bad; while an "old tech" eyepiece with a narrow FOV, everyone's kit should have a couple of these--they're planet killers and sharp to the edge. On axis, they're about the best eyepiece going.....and off axis---how many CHEAP eyepieces can you say that about!! Sometimes cheap is the price and not the quality......Clear skies. Sad to see yet another vendor/mfg (and a good one) go dark; it's like a star dissappearing from the sky....

Yeah, apparently their master optician died and that brings the end of an honored line of eyepieces.

I know I bought a 9mm today and I was going to wait until summer, but it can't wait. Talked to UO and the guy there said they will probably be gone by the end of the month.

Bummer. I recently got a 5mm, and I was hoping to get a larger one that I could use more often. Fortunately, the Baader Classic Orthos are finally coming out and the reviews are promising.

They are the gold standard for which all other planetary eyepieces have been measured... I very sad day indeed.

They have a long history as being superb planetaries.

Frankly, I'm not going to buy one. I've got some Delos eyepieces and I just don't think those Abbe' Orthos are going to do a better job than the Delos.

That means more are available for those of you who do want to get one (or more).

I picked up a 9mm. I sold my old EPs with my old scope so all I have right now is the cheap Celestron EP kit that came with my new telescope and my Meade Zoom. I figured this should be a pretty good EP to start a good EP collection with.
