Default Meade Series 5000 UWA 30mm

    Hi,

Im currently trying to build my eyepiece collection one at a time. 2 years ago I purchased 2 Meade UWA Series 5000 EP for my 8" Meade Lightbridge and really enjoyed the views through them. Im currently looking at scoring the 14mm UWA. I noticed that there is a 30mm in the Meade Series UWA family. All the reviews are great and I am thinking of replacing the Mease 2" 26mm QX with this piece. Will that eye piece be too heavy in my scope? Will it require counter weights? Would like to hear otheres thoughts or experiences with this EP before I take the plunge.

    Brian,
I've just ordered one for my 10". Its apparently huge and will almost certainly require counterweights.

    Hi Brian
I had my first hands on experience with one the other day. Strewth! It's enormous.
It makes my Terminagler look small.
A cat could sleep in the box it comes in.
You will deffinitily need counterweights I say this without a shadow of doubt.
    Regards Steve

Thanks guys. A store has one on consigmnment sale for $250 and the owner says it is brand new. It is a 1.5 hours drive but it is worth it. I will post my first light with it hopefully after tonight.

    Cheers

I purchased the 30mm and it looks even bigger than the pictures. I put it in lastnight and quickly found out that counterweights will be pinnacle with using this piece. I will also have to play with my focuser abit since I noticed that when adjusting that the focusing tube would tend to compress under the weight.

    She is a beauty though.

Well I finally counter weighted my scope. Took 5 pounds to balance her (using ankle weights) but after that I brought out the 30mm lastnight and it didnt dissapoint. I first looked at Saturn. Such a crisp view of Saturn and all that is around it. Then I pointed at Mars. I am amazed at the amount of detail which you cant see around it with the naked eye. So many stars which become visible with a good eye piece. My wife then came out and took a gander through the behemoth and she said she really enjoyed viewing through it. She too was amazed at the amount of detail which it made visible to eye. She understood why I wanted the beast.

Cant wait for another good night to plan out a good viewing session with it.

That is a monster if it took 5lbs. to counterweigh it. Good idea about the ankle weights. How did you hook them to your scope? Lastly, sounds like you got a good eyepiece and Im glad its making you and your wife so happy! Please give us a report when you get a good session in. I want to hear how it does on some deep sky stuff.
