Default Review of the University Optics WS 20mm 80 Degree Wide Field EP

I recently purchased this EP for use in my Orion XT10 Dob. Right out of the box I was impressed with the finish...it looks and feels like a quality EP. This was also my first 2" diameter EP, and I was somwhat impressed with the size of the thing...it was substantially larger than the 1.25" Plossls I am used to!

My first observing session began with a little experimentation - I found that the EP would not come to focus unless I used the set screw to hold it in place approximately one-third of the way out. This didn't matter too much, because the EP has a long enough barrel that the assembly was still fairly secure in this configuration. Probably not worth trying to move the mirror up in the cell.

Once I found focus, I used it to view the Great Orion nebula. I was impressed with the FOV, but there was some distortion at the edges of the field. I'm thinking the XT10 is a fast scope; perhaps the EP would work better in something with a longer focal ratio. In any event, I found I could ignore the issue (the wide field helped) and very much enjoyed the viewing. Overall I recommend the EP to anyone considering purchase.

Thank you for the review. Helpful.

Note that you can get an extension tube for your scope and eyepiece. It doesn't always work out, though. I had the same focus problem with my 14mm ES eyepiece in my XT8. I got a 2 inch extension tube and then I couldn't focus with that - so I just do like you are doing, pull the eyepiece back a bit, secure it, and enjoy.

But an extension tube might work for you.
