Default Not Happy with the Barlow 2X

I am new to this major upgrade from ye olden ETX 70AT to this dinosaur DOB 12Inch.
I love my 2"30mm Lens. Cannot live without it.
I'll learn to live with the 1.25" 9mm

As far as the ED 2x Barlow Lens hate it!

What a waste of money there.

I am now looking for one of those push/pull Lens, that zoom from
one power X to another x quickly instead of switching lenses.

    What do you all think?

barlows with ed glass are usually pretty good.
infact very good as a rule of thumb.
what do you hate about it exactly?
a good 8-24mm zoom?a couple fit the bill,
either the meade or the baader hyperion.
    the latter being more expensive.

Have to say I agree iv got a GSO ED 2” 2x Barlow and the detail I lose with it means its nothing more than an expensive paper weight the celestron 2x 1.25 Barlow outperforms it hands down I still lose some detail but not as bad. Now I don’t use Barlow’s if I can help it and the ep’s I used with them are an assortment of plossles and a set of celestron x-cel lx’s. Even using the 2” Barlow with my canon 40d on the moon the sharpest images I can get are a disappointment so it isn’t the ep’s (and it isn’t a back focus issue with the camera either).

I don't know very much about this game yet, but I do know this much----- What may look good today, may not look so good tomorrow. "Same scope, Same lens". Try again with the barlow another night and you may "fall in love with it". I mean, Why not? It's "paid for", Right?

I love this eyepiece. The Hyperion Baader MKIII impresses me every time I use it. It IS a little bit on the expensive side but the cost is completely worth the views and convenience. I use this eyepiece probably 95% of the time.

Once iv got my full set of celestron x-Cel lx eps (not top shelf but for the price iv been getting them for what the hell) 3 more to get 9-18-2.3 im going to save up and treat me old eyeballs to something off the top shelf dont know what yet but I like my 5mm and 7mm on the planets got some plossles down to 4mm but eye relief is a bit tight. Maybe a good zoom SOOOOOOO much choice : ) and the barrows will still get some use but if it means losing detail they can stay in the box.

There is a similar club regarding zooms :-) I have a couple of zoom lenses for my camera but they are used only in special situations. The rest of the time I use prime lenses only as they are sharper and faster. Now before anyone jumps on "buy a good zoom", two of my four zooms are pro glass and I use them for sports all the time, but when I need a good portait lens, good macro lens, or pretty much anything that I don't need to reframe the picture fast for, I reach for a prime. My last shoot was last week for a national PR firm handling the grand opening of a new national chain restaurant location, almost all prime shots and they said they were thrilled with the images so I must be doing something right (even if by accident!).

I do the same with my astro gear, primes only, and although I have a high-end APO barlow I rarely use it because of the image degradation.

    To each their own.

Have to agree with you I do a lot of close-up and macro and all the zooms iv used over the years have had a sweet spot in the range and it varies with the f stop. I dont have any zoom eps but I would think the same would apply and may vary from scope to scope. I may be wrong and again this is from a photography point of view.
