    Default Barlow Lens, 2" 2X

This is a follow up on my correspondence on this subject in the Beginners Forum.

I wanted to say how pleased I am with the the Apertura ED 2" 2X Barlow Lens from Opticsmart.com that I received today (Dec 24) just 8 days after it was shipped. That's fast service to Canada, especially at this time of year. The shipping package was undamaged and the lens was very well wrapped inside. It is in excellent condition. I am very pleased with the service and correspondence with this company and would recommend them to anyone.

The lens can be removed from the barrel and attached directly to a 2" eyepiece if desired. It also accepts the 48mm screw-in eyepiece filters. It comes with a 1.25" adapter. Both the adapter and the main barrel use brass compression rings to hold your eyepieces in place. For the price of $49.98 and free shipping in the USA and <$8.00 to Canada, this seems to be a good deal. If you want to order from Canada, you will have to email them directly but they respond very quickly and are very helpful.

Now, I just need some clear skies to try it out. We are having a White Christmas (for a change) but with overcast skies.

I am almost sure that your barlow and my zhumell 2 in. ED barlow are the same relabeled GSO barlow. I am very happy with mine and if they are really the same you (and I ) got a real bargain.

Hope you get to use it soon, give us a report.

is it easy to swap out eyepieces using this 2'' barlow in a dob without losing your target?
i've been contemplating a 2'' barlow, i just don't know if it would be easier to just use a 1.25''

Well, I really don't know about that. The weather here has been overcast and snowing. Impossible to use of course. Christmas day was clear but we had company that evening and besides, it was -10 C. So, hopefully we will have better viewing nights soon and I will make a report as to its performance. Although, I expect that the target will move somewhat as you go to a higher magnification and the field of view becomes narrower.

I use my TeleVue 2X big barlow with my 26 mm 2" eyepiece. I just love it compared to a 15 mm or 12 mm 1.25 eyepiece

I am hoping for the same results with my new Barlow. I have a 26mm 2" and a 32mm 2" eyepieces both of which I will use the Barlow with.

I use my zhumell 2 inch ED barlow with a Garrett 32mm SWA for an effective 16mm and 72 deg AFV.

I prefer to use the 2 in barlow over the 1.25 GSO even with 1.25 in eyepieces. The larger barlow holds the eyepieces more securely and there is no need to change when going to a 2 in eyepiece. The GSO is optically very good and is built well but the zhumell 2 inch has compression rings on the barlow as well as the adapter that came with it.

The GSO will find a home with my 8 inch scope after I get the mirror recoated. The 8 has a 1.25 inch focuser. I can also unscrew the lens of the GSO and atach it to the filter threads of a 1.25 eyepiece and get 1.5X.

The zhumell does the same thing for a 2 inch eyepiece.

I use my barlows a lot.
