Default Celestron 8-24mm Zoom EP - Problem

    Hi all.
Got a problem here. I've been looking through telescopes on and off for years but never used/owned a zoom lense before. Since I bought a new Nexstar 6 SE I thought I might as well give the zoom lense a try as well.

On my first use I couldn't see well and I found it was due to a finger print on the lense (closest to where you attach the lense to the scope) and the lenses is receded quite a ways in so I know I didn't touch it. I was able to clean the lense but when looking through it without the telescope attached - I see what looks like a blur of crystal-type shapes. (As best as I can describe it) I attached it to the scope and aimed at a hilltop tree and though I could see the tree, it sure didn't look as clear as I thought it should.

I know with regular lenses when looking through them you do *not* see anything crystal shaped so is this natural for a zoom lense?? I've heard you don't get a sharp view like you would through a regular lense but something to me just doesn't look right. Also, the fingerprint I removed was most visible because it was black-greasy - or black paint chips lying on it. (I did 'puff' the lense with the bulb and brush before cleaning to remove any chance of paint chips cutting into the lense).

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Just looked through my Zhumell 8/24mm and I see nothing like that. If it is brand new, I would contact the vendor and get a replacement. The optics should be pristine in a brand new eyepiece.

    Did you buy this used?

Sounds to me like someone tried to disassemble it and clean it-- I own the exact same zoom-- the view through mine is clear.

Thanks. That's what I was afraid of, I never saw anything quite like this. Yes, I bought it new through Amazon. Since I haven't tried anything but simply cleaning that one lense (which did not involve disassembly - I know anything else wasn't done by me. I'll have to see about sending it back.

    Update:
I got frustrated last night and said 'what the heck' and unthreaded the eyepiece to get to the larger lense that moves when you zoom. I found it coated with something oily - I simply wiped it off and it corrected the problem. I tried it out last night (Finally a clear night!) on Jupiter as Io was transiting and got some wonderful views of it's shadow on Jupiter.

I think my problem is solved but it sure makes me feel like I was sent a used zoom lenses and not a new one like I paid for. A fingerprint on one lense and an oily substance on the other. :/

That was an obvious error that should have been caught by Quality Control. On the bright side, I believe that this is the first qc issue I have heard of with these eyepieces. I'm glad you got it sorted, however you should e mail them and let them know what condition you're eyepiece was in when it was received.

You should also remind them that all us AA type people talk about these issues and they should tighten up the ship. They might even throw in a freebie or something to make up for their lack of quality control.
