Default Celestron 8-24 vs Televue Nagler 9mm Type 6 and others

Just got my Celestron 8-24 zoom EP.

    Notes:
    • Big.. too big to fit a spot in my EP case.. too tall to close case
    • Comes with a nice plastic case that looks like a small plastic cup with a screw on lid.
    • Stiff - Was surprised how stiff the zoom action was.. need to really tighten the EP so it doesn't move.
    • Rubber eye cup pops off to reveal T-Ring threads.. Haven't tried with DSLR yet.. couldn't focus with my video camera. so far.

    8mm vs 9mm Nagler
OK this should be easy.. after all the Nagler is a $250-$300 EP with a legend behind it. But I was surprised at how close they perform especially on dim objects and clusters. I was shocked at how close it was on Wild Duck and M13 to the Nagler.. The FOV is very wide not as wide as the nagler but very nice. The visual of nebulosity and resolving the stars was almost the same.
I would say 90%+ of the performance for 1/5th the price. edge sharpness might not be as good.. but much better than when the C-zoom is at 24mm.

Where there is a break down is the EP has some halo around brighter objects. But actually there was one galaxy where I couldn't find it in the nagler and I am pretty sure I had it in the C Zoom.

    24mm vs Standard 25mm Celestron
This is easy... the zoom is sharper in the middle and distorts on the edge, it also as a narrower FOV.. But it works just fine for doing the align.
You can see the weakness if you try to put Mizar and Alchor in the same FOV the star near the edge is distorted.. it is sharp on the fixed 25mm.
BUT... when looking at M13 cluster at 24mm it resolved the stars better than the base 25mm EP.

at 24mm it is find for aligning the scope.. and centralized objects.. BUT I prefer the 25MM for open clusters and just wandering in the sky looking for pretty groupings of stars.

    Big Extra...
As the magnification increases.. the sky grows darker. The zoom allowed me to find a viewing sweet spot that would be between my standard EPs where faint objects like Swan would start to stand out Its nice to find the EP zoom that is best for reach object.

    Misc Notes
Better than an $100 EP Kit... When I bought my first scope I got an EP kit with 32-4 mm EP selection.. and 2x barlow. This is better than a kit. Didn't try it a barlow..

I also liked view of Saturn tonight.. seemed nice and sharp at all zoom factors.

But there is a bit of Halo... again like on bright stars. Bright stars are nicer in the 25mm EP..

The key is... For $55.. this is nice device and I hope to try some EP projection AP with it later this week.

Only problem with getting a bigger case Joe..... you then need more eyepieces to fill it, and so the vicious circle begins. ;-)

    Thanks for the review, Ken.

I have considered getting a zoom EP for a long time, but I do my best to use what I have until I absolutely, positively have a good reason to buy something new.

Good luck with solving the storage issue ;0)

Quick Note I did get the video focused and posted the first results in
First Video of Saturn off my 8SE

This was the main reason for jumping on the C 8mm-24mm. since it was not much more than an EP adapter and I am not sure all my EP would have fit.

    Awesome review Ken.
I have been searching for some some zoom EP but I am not quite sure if I still want one. This EP that you review'ed is definitely in my list. If it could perform so good in such a low price.
    Thanks

Keep in mind that many are reporting that the MEADE which sells for almost twice as much is sharper but is still a good deal. For me the t-threads to play with video and projection AP makes the Celestron the only low cost option for me.
