    Default Illuminated Reticle Eye Piece

What exactly is a Illuminated Reticle Eye Piece? I'm a bit confused as to why an eye piece would need to be illuminated?

    Thanks.

    Hi David,

It has a crosshair in the field. If it is not illuminated, the crosshair is very hard to see against the background of the field of view. Think of your Telrad. Without the concentric circles being illuminated, it would be hard if not impossible to use, eh?

You can do a search for more information, CompanySeven has good articles on accessories. And, if you look below the "Quick Post" box down this page, you will see a number of threads on the same topic.

What it's used for is centering objects. This is important when going for a precise star alignment. You want the star to be really, truly centered when you tell the controller that it is.

It is also used for drift alignment, where you watch how a star drifts relative to the cross-hairs. This is used to refine the precision of a polar alignment.

Another type of illuminated eyepiece is this one: Astrometric eyepiece. It allows the user to measure position angles of stars and do other measurements that are useful for certain types of astronomical research.

EDIT: almost forgot there are also reticle eyepieces that have outlines to help frame objects for CCD imaging, don't have a link to one but just think of different sized boxes in the field that correspond to various CCD chip/magnification combinations.

Concerning reticles for centring, I use my camera and APT prog which has a reticle on the live view screen.
