Default Is my EP Plossl or super plossl?

I posted this thread on the EP forum but thought it might be of more use on this forum?

Hi, I bought a GSO 32mm Super plossl EP from scopes and skies in the UK, two weeks ago . Whilst I am very happy with the view through the EP in conjunction with my 127slt, I am a bit confused as to what, if any, difference there is between plossl and super plossl.
The main reason for asking is that although my GSO 32mm EP was described as "super plossl" on the scopes & skies website and all the images i have found on the web show these EPs reading "super plossl - fully multi coated" on them. My actual EP only reads "plossl - multi coated" on it. My box and receipt state that ive bought a "super plossl" but have I or is it just a packaging/printing discrepancy? If it isnt a Super plossl then is it worth trying to return the EP and exchanging it for a super plossl??? any opinions helpful, thanks

If you paid for a Super Plossl you should have received a Super Plossl. And if it were a Super Plossl I'd bet that it would say that it was a Super Plossl on the eyepiece itself.

So personally, I would call the dealer and tell them they sent you the wrong eyepiece and they need to send you the right one.

"Super" means nothing but advertising hype in this case, as far as I know.

IIRC, the Super Plossl is a 5 element design also known as the Masuyama. It is a variant of the Erfle - and is different from the 4 element Plossl.

However, it is my understanding that at some point Meade stopped putting 5 elements into their Super Plossls - and only uses 4 elments but continues to market them as Super Plossls.

Whether GSO is marketing Plossls as Super Plossls I honestly don't know. It might be interesting to learn. Best way I know to learn is to call the dealer and ask them why the OP was sent a Plossl when he ordered a Super Plossl.

Edit: Did some more researching. As best I can tell, GSO's Super Plossl's are only four element. They still may be a better design than the regular Plossls - but I'd not bet much on that. I also saw where someone was saying that Meade's current 4000 series are re-badged GSO Super Plossls (might have better quality control and maybe different coatings?)

gso do indeed supply meade, aswell as several
others who just rebrand them and up the price.
i have a number of gso super plossls, they all say
plossl on them.no need to worry.they are a better
    ep than the standards.
the superviews are the ones with 5 elements.

I had the same experience with Scopes and Skies.
I bet you were given the Antares 32mm, rather than the GSO, but were charged for the GSO. Take/send it back, with receipt and get your money returned- I did.

I thought this was an honest mistake, but now I'm not so sure!

    The supers are different eyepieces.
Super Plossels have greater FOV & longer eye relief then 4 element regular Plossels. They can have 5 OR 6 elements in them. The larger ones in the 40mm-50mm size use 6 elements lots of times for corrections.
Meade & many others make super Plossels today. The Meade series 5000 is an all super Plossels set, the series 4000 is just Plossel etc....
