Default Help with eyepiece choice part 2

Thanks for all of your input in my previous thread. Wow, a lot to consider. I checked with my store and they will give me a refund for the 9mm Z100 I have (I can tell a quality difference compared with my 35mm Panoptic). I'm now set on Tele Vue-type quality and need to fill in some higher power , down from the 35mm Panoptic. I was trying to stay with a 2" eyepiece to change out easily and to use my 2" nebula filter occasionally (probably Nagler, not Ethos). It looks like the 12mm Nagler is as low a fl as I can go and stay at 2". I need some advice on what would fill in the higher power the best with quality. I don't think i'll be using the 25mm Plossl much after getting the 35mm Panoptic. With my scope do I need more than one quality 11mm to 17mm range eyepiece? Which one would be the best. Thanks for your input, Bret

Hmmm.. a 2" eyepiece, even at lower than 12mm, Televue like quality, good quality 11mm to 17mm - - looks very much like a job for the Hyperion 8-24mm zoom! It can be used in both 1-1/4" or 2" mode (even at 8mm); I've come across a post that says he can't tell the difference between a Nalger 12mm and the HypZoom at 12mm so he sold the Nagler; the zoom's 11mm to 17mm is a good range and wider view than standard plossls, it's a good all around EP that will not give up much from more expensive premium EP's and is definitely a world-class EP favored by many (one of the "Gear of the Year 2009" in another forum). Just one EP to consider; hope this helps.

    Best,

    Hernando

    20mm Nagler = 60x
    17mm Nager = 70x
    12mm Nagler = 100x

I own all three of these, 20T5, 17T4, 12T2 and absolutley love them. However I have quite a slower scope than you do so the magnifications for me are quite a difference than your 8 inch dob.

The people that I know who have 8-12 inch dobs and use the Nagler/Ethos line typically have the Nagler 12T2 or 13T1 (most of the guys in the club have been around a long time) and a 9T1 or 8 ethos fwiw, all of which are 2 / 1-1/4 inch barrels, as the two eyepieces they change in and out most from what I have seen.

If it was me, I would buy the 12, and I would buy it on the used market. Although Televue are loved by many, there is never any guarantee that you will actually be comfortable with the eyepiece for your own eyeballs...heck I had to keep my Agena SWA because the Nagler literally made my wife sick to her stomach looking in it.
