    Default Planetary eyepiece for dobson

Hello folks, I'm new in this forum, hope someone can help me in this decision

I need a new eyepiece in the range of 4-5 mm for planetary observation with my dobson 10" f5

I've excluded ortho or plossl for the short eye relief

After reading tons of threads, reviews and articles, and considering my budget restrictions, I've narrowed my choices to those two:

    Baader Hyperion 5mm
Televue powermate 2.5x to be used paired with my baader hyperion zoom 8-24

I love my zoom and I like the idea to transform it in a 3.2-9.6 with the powermate, but I'm concerned about contrast and sharpness vs an hyperion 5mm

    thanks

To a fellow-Hyperion zoom lover, welcome to the forum!
Aside from the zoom, my other Hyperion is the 21mm and don't have the short focal length (FL) ones, but do know that the zoom barlows quite well, especially with a 2.5x Poweremate, such that I've purchased one although it's not yet in my hands. But I've come across aonother Hyperion zoom owner who had the occasion to directly compare the zoom-barlow combo vs. the short focal length Hyperion and had this to say:

I used a barlow to get it to 3.5mm and I had
a Hyperion 3.5 to compare. I quickly sold the 3.5
The Zoom just blew it out of the water so to speak.
Of course this is just one post making a direct comparison of the barlowed HypZoom vs. the short FL Hyperion. Clear skies!

    Best,

    Hernando

Thank you very much for this post Hernando

I'm getting more oriented to the powermate now

Someone else told me the powermate is not just only a good barlow, it effectively act as a focal multiplier without introducing any aberration or image degradation

and as I know, usually EPs work better on longer focal ratio

Sure, will do (may take a while as astro gear still being consolidated in my US address then to ship overseas, you know how it is being outside US).

Have you heard of the Hyperion 21mm barlow lens/nosepiece being unscrewed, then screwed back to the 2" adapter of the HypZoom to give a 4-12mm zoom equivalent? I've tried it and it was comparable to the zoom on a 1-1/4" TV 2x barlow.

    Best,

    Hernando

I like the Hyperion 3.5 mm, I think it gives a better view on planets and double stars than even my old Meade 8.8 mm UWA with a Barlow, except at the very edges of the field, where the Meade is superior.

Ok, thank you guys for your posts

I'm finally going to order my powermate

Hernando, do you mean that is possible to replace the negative element in the hyperion with another with a greater multiplier ratio?

This sound interesting, you can double the zoom power without add any other lens ....
