Smile Baader Hyps, Celestron Ultima or Meade 5000?

    Hi Guys,

Need a little help if you may,

I want to upgrade my EPs, I will be doing this gradually and looking to spend around £150 per piece. I'm just stuck with the choices above!
Could someone suggest what they would think is the better? I also unsure on the sizes i.e 1.25 or 2"? And any suggestions on a good diagonal too? I was looking at the WO dielectric??

I know I'm being a pain but I greatly thank anyone who could help.

What kind of scope do you have, and does it have a 2 inch focuser? I've only used the hyperion (8mm). I am very pleased with it. A very solid ep with great views.

I just got the WO dielectric diagonal with the carbon fiber sides. It works like it should -- that is, it is completely "transparent", you don't even know it's there when you're looking thru it. It's costly, and I have no real comparison database, but I'm happy with it. You know you've got something when you hold a WO product in your hands. The workmanship is impressive. One thing is the setscrew on the 1.25 inch adapter: it's different from the one on the other WO 1.25 inch adapter that I have, because it sits further into the diagonal, and for this reason it has a long skinny knob instead of a short fat one. I got the adapters mixed up and was puzzled as to why the fat knob was hitting the housing...until I checked the knobs and figured it out. Anyway, it's a fine product.

I'm seriously considering a Baader 3.5 mm ep, which I will go looking for tomorrow unless I hear really bad things here today.

Hi marylandbiscuits. As you can see from my signature line I have several Hyperions and a couple of the Meade SWA eyepieces. I've been pleased with them in both my f/4.9 reflector and my mak. Not top of the line but good value for the money in my opinion. Eyepieces are really dependent on your scope, viewing preferences and seeing conditions. In my conditons I only use the higher power eyepieces on really good nights. Mostly I use the 13mm and 17mm hyperions. I also have the 2" WO carbon fibre diagonal. Originally in my refractor and now in the mak. As already said it is "transparent". Nice looking piece of hardware though if you are into asthetics.

Same here, this is really a personal decision. Try out your astro-buddy's eyepieces! I have a 13mm and 21mm Hyperion they are both very nice.

dmbryan alsetalokin lenbo & Joe Lalumia, a big thanks to you all!
Very much appropriate your help and suggestions!

I reckon I'll buy a 13mm Baader and go from there, they do sound very comfortable to use

Just one more question, has anyone used a 2" Crayford for an SCT?
basically I just feel like tarting up my schmidt a bit but also to keep the extras I buy for when I upgrade etc. Would the back focuser help for photography and focusing?

    Kind regards
    Adrian

Yes, I've used both the WO SCT 2" Crayford style focuser (old type) and the WO 2" dielectric diagonal to good use on the SCT scope (8"). Depending on the scope & mount being used, the focuser is quite big that it might hinder viewing at zenith position unless the scope is moved further up the rail which is not possible on some scopes without modification.

It sure helps in focusing because they usually have dual/two-speed mechanisms, one for coarse focusing and the other for fine focusing with a 10:1 focus ratio. Those not wanting the added back-end bulk take to other options like the Feathertouch focuser or the electronic JMI Motofocus which both take over the stock focuser. All these 3 after-market focusers help eliminate/reduce vibrations associated with using the stock focuser thus allowing one to achieve the best focus on any object.

As to the question of whether the Crayford focuser helps in astrophotography, my focuser is out on loan for quite some time now to an American astro buddy who swears by them and acknowledges how it has helped him get stunning results with his 8" SCT scope, shown below installed on his astrophotography setup (SCT scope on the left side):

Look at some of his astro pics here:

AND-- what's neat about the Hyperion is that you can remove the bottom lens element and it becomes a 2 inch eyepiece at a higher focal length, or attach a "ring" and it becomes a lower focal length eyepiece. So you have 3 magnifications in one eyepiece.
